General Information on Oxsoralen
Oxsoralen is a medication used for treating skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis and vitiligo. Generic name of the drug is methoxsalen and it belongs to the class of drugs termed as psoralens. For treating atopic dermatitis and psoriasis, it works by making the skin more sensitive to UV light and is usually used in combination with a UV light therapy. For treating vitiligo, it functions by restoring color to the affected skin areas. You can buy Oxsoralen in the form of topical lotion and also oral tablets. You will have to choose the one as per your skin condition and your doctor’s prescription.
Side Effects for Oxsoralen
Itching on skin, nervousness, nausea, depression, dizziness and skin changes like rash, acne or freckles may occur. Most of these side effects are harmless and get better on their own, but if any of these become intolerable, you should contact your doctor immediately. You should also inform your doctor if you develop sore or reddened skin, swelling on lower legs or feet or peeling or blistering of the skin. An allergic reaction to the drug can be identified by severe dizziness, trouble breathing, hives or rashes on the body and swelling or itching on face, throat, lips or tongue. If you notice any of these, you should immediately stop using the medicine and contact your doctor.
Precautions
Your doctor will not advise you to buy Oxsoralen if you are allergic to it, if you are less than 12 years of age or if you have poor liver function, aphasia or a medical condition that increases sunlight sensitivity like lupus, leukoderma or porphyria. While taking UV light therapy, you should keep the eyes closed or wear goggles. Avoid eating foods that increase risks of reaction to sunlight, such as celery, carrot, mustard, parsnip, parsley, fig and lime. If you are pregnant or breast feeding, you should not take this medicine unless the doctor determines that the benefits outweigh the risks involved. This is because safety of the drug during these conditions is not yet established.
Oxsoralen Dosage
For atopic dermatitis and psoriasis, you will be advised to take the medicine before 2 hours of UV light therapy. For vitiligo, you will be advised to take Oxsoralen 20mg everyday regularly 3-4 hours before being exposed to sunlight or UV light therapy or a soft gelatin capsule 1-2 hours before UV light therapy or going to sunlight. The dosage prescribed to a patient largely depends on the patient’s body weight. Usually, you will be asked to take Oxsoralen tablets with milk or after meals. If you are using Oxsoralen lotion for vitiligo, you will need to apply it once in a week to some of the depigmented areas and be exposed to UV light for one minute. Change the sites of application and if you use both lotion and capsules, you should protect areas with lotion from UV light.
Interactions
You should not use Oxsoralen if you are already taking anticoagulants like warfarin or heparin and medicines that increase sensitivity to sunlight like ciprofloxacin and hydrochlorothiazide. You should also inform your doctor about all the topical applications you are using at present, including cosmetic products and herbal products.
