General Information on Paxil
Paxil is used for treating conditions like depression, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, premenstrual dysphoric disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. Generic name of the drug is paroxetine and it belongs to the group of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. It works by affecting neurotransmitters in the brain, which become unbalanced in the patients. You can buy Paxil in the form of oral tablets with 10mg, 20mg and 30mg strengths.
Side Effects for Paxil
Some of the side effects commonly reported by Paxil patients include mild headache, dizziness, insomnia, diarrhea, restlessness, nervousness, mild nausea, weight changes, constipation, impotence, difficulty having orgasm, decreased libido, yawning, dry mouth and ringing in the ears. However, you need to inform your doctor if you experience unusual bone tenderness or pain, bruising or swelling, unusual bleeding from rectum, mouth, vagina or nose, coughing up blood, fainting, rigid muscles, overactive reflexes, tremors, hallucinations, memory problems, shallow breathing, seizures, stopped breathing, loss of coordination, easy bruising, high fever and loss of appetite. You should also inform your doctor if you notice worsening or new symptoms like panic attacks, mood changes, behavior changes, anxiety, thoughts of suicide or feelings of impulsiveness, agitation, irritability, hostility, aggressiveness, restlessness, hyperactivity or severe depression.
Precautions
Before taking Paxil, you should inform your doctor if you have a kidney or liver disease, a blood clotting or bleeding disorder, seizure or epilepsy, narrow-angle glaucoma, bipolar disorder or if you have a history of suicidal thoughts or drug abuse. This medicine is meant for patients more than 18 years and if it is used in younger patients, it may increase risks of emotional and behavioral changes, including suicidal thoughts. Elderly patients will need a lower dose of the medicine to treat the condition. If you are pregnant, you should not take Paxil especially during your last trimester, as it may lead to low blood sugar, jitteriness, trouble breathing, seizure, vomiting, shaking, constant crying, irritability and vomiting. This medicine also passes into a lactating mother’s breast milk and therefore, you should not use it if you are breast feeding, as it may harm your baby.
Paxil Dosage
Your doctor may advise you to take Paxil 20mg to 60mg once in a day, with or without food, preferably in the morning. You should not crush, chew, break or dissolve the tablet but should swallow it whole with glass full of water. The dosage recommended to you depends on your body weight, condition that is being treated, other medical conditions you are suffering from, other medicines you are taking with Paxil and how your body is responding to the treatment.
Interactions
Some of the drugs that may interact with Paxil include blood thinners like warfarin, heart medicines like digoxin and quinidine, medicines for treating psychiatric disorders like fluphenazine and lithium and other antidepressants like amitriptyline and escitalopram. Your doctor will not advise you to buy Paxil if you are already taking cimetidine, fentanyl, fosamprenavir, linezolid, ritonavir, tamoxifen, tramadol, theophylline and tryptophan. Apart from these, you should also not other medicines that may add to the dizziness caused by Paxil, including sedatives, muscle relaxants, anti-anxiety medications, sleeping pills, tranquilizers, anti-seizure medications and narcotic pain relievers.
