General Information on Precedex
Precedex is a medication used for sedation of intubated patients in ICU. The generic name of this medication is Dexmedetomidine Hydrochloride. This drug is administered through controlled infusion. As this is a prescription-based medicine, you cannot buy Precedex without a doctor’s prescription.
Side Effects for Precedex
Precedex may cause certain side effects. Some of these side effects include low blood pressure and a reduced heart rate, also known as bradycardia. This can lead to shortness of breath or fainting. The risk of suffering from bradycardia increases if the patient is suffering from a heart disease. Consult your doctor immediately if you show signs of low blood pressure or reduced heart rate. Your doctor, depending on the severity of these side effects, may either reduce the dosage or stop the medication.
Some Patients may suffer transient hypertension when Precedex is injected into their system. This is due to the fact that Precedex may initially constrict the walls surrounding blood vessels, resulting in higher blood pressure.
Other minor and rare side effects of Precedex include dry mouth, anemia, chills, hyperthermia, fever, and abnormal or irregular heart beats. Some more side effects include shortness of breath, difficulty in breathing, and chest pain that exacerbate with a deep breath (pleural effusion). Additional side effects that are associated with Precedex include rapid heart rate, a reduced flow of oxygen (hypoxia), and less than normal urination.

Precautions
Inform your doctor in advance if you have heart blockage or if you suffer from any other heart disorder. Other conditions that you must notify your doctor are low blood volume (hypovolemia), diabetes, and chronic hypertension.
Precedex may or may not affect an unborn child. Inform your doctor well before the procedure if you are pregnant. Do not breastfeed your baby without consulting your doctor if you are being administered Precedex.
Precedex Dosage
You may buy Precedex as a sterile solution suitable for intravenous infusion after it is diluted. It is available as Precedex 200mcg in a 2ml clear glass vial. Each vial is intended only for a single use. The dosage must be modified to suit an individual patient. During the treatment, patient’s blood pressure level, oxygen level, and heart rate should be monitored continuously.
Interactions
Precedex may interact with certain other medications. Your doctor will know which medications you should not take along with this medication. During the course of the treatment, do not take any new medication without informing your doctor. This includes herbal supplements, as well as non-prescription medicines.
