General Information on Prepidil

Prepidil is a medication that is taken by pregnant women for relaxing the cervix at the end of the pregnancy to induce labor. The generic name of this medication is Dinoprostone. This medication belongs to a group of hormones known as Prostaglandins. You may buy Prepidil as a topical gel to be applied around the opening of the uterus.

Side Effects for Prepidil

Inform your gynecologist if your contractions become slow or uneven after applying Prepidil. Other side effects that you need to be aware of include sudden vaginal bleeding, pale skin, blue lips, and tightness in the chest, coughing, wheezing, and breathing troubles. Tell your doctor immediately if you suffer from any of the side effects mentioned above.

Some side effects of this medicine may occur after delivery. These side effects include weakness, fainting, or unusual bleeding from the vagina, rectum, mouth or nose. Other side effects may include tarry or blood stools, coughing blood or vomiting coffee colored grounds, sudden weakness or numbness on any one side of the body, severe headache, or vision, speech or balance problems. Additional side effects include bleeding from any wound or vein where an IV was administered or from a surgical incision. If you experience any of these, immediately report them to your doctor.

In some patients, Prepidil may cause the following minor side effects – nausea, stomach pain, back pain, or a feeling of warmth in and around the vaginal area. Tell your doctor at once if these side effects persist or worsen.

Precautions

Do not buy Prepidil if you are allergic to prostaglandins or if your water has already broken. Inform your doctor if you have active genital herpes with vaginal lesions or if the placenta is below the fetus in the uterus (placenta previa). You may not be administered Prepidil under these conditions.

In addition, you need to inform your doctor if you have had a c-section, any major surgery on the uterus, or if you have had a baby who was not born head first. You must also tell your doctor if you have had any kind of unusual difficulty during the labor or delivery of your previous child.

Before you buy Prepidil, tell your doctor your medical history, especially if you have a kidney disease, a liver disease, asthma, and/or glaucoma. Also, inform your doctor if you are above 30 years of age or if your pregnancy is at full term.

Prepidil Dosage

You cannot buy Prepidil over the counter and apply it on your own. This medication is applied by a nurse, delivering doctor, or any other qualified healthcare professional. Prepidil is given while the patient is lying on her back, and a vaginal speculum may be used to view the cervix while applying the medication. This allows your doctor to determine the dosage of Prepidil. Once the gel is applied, it is recommended that you remain in the same position for at least 15 minutes, unless specified otherwise by your doctor.

Interactions

Prepidil may interact with other medications that you are taking – oral or topical. So, make sure that you inform your doctor about all the medications that you have been using.
