General Information On Proscar

Male patients may be asked to buy Proscar (Finasteride) if they show symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and the drug is prescribed by their doctor. In BPH, men have an enlarged prostrate. This drug, finasteride, stops the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone. High levels of dihydrotestosterone is a major cause in the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Proscar specifically inhibits the function of Type II 5α-reductase. The conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone in the liver, prostate gland and skin is caused by the presence of the enzyme type II 5α-reductase.

Side Effects for Proscar

Common side effects for Proscar include allergic reactions in the form of hives, swelling of the face, lips, mouth and tongue, and breathing difficulty. In some cases, it can be accompanied by breast lumps or nipple discharge or pain in the breasts, as well as other changes in the breast, all of which could be misconstrued as signs of breast cancer.

Other side effects include swelling in the hands and feet, dizziness or weakness, skin rash, headache, nausea and a general feeling of swooning. It is also possible to experience abnormal ejaculation, decrease in the amount of ejaculate, a general loss of interest in sex as well as a decrease in libido, lack of orgasms, and impotence.

Precautions

Proscar is not meant for women or children and therefore, should be avoided. It is important to ensure that women and children do not even handle this drug at any point in time as it can be absorbed through the skin.

Pregnant women should avoid handling Proscar at all costs as this drug can cause birth defects. If any pregnant woman comes in contact with the drug, either in crushed form or whole, they must wash the area of contact immediately with soap.

Inform your doctor in advance if you are suffering from any liver disease, prostate cancer, stricture of urethra, muscle disorder of the bladder muscles, etc., including the inability to urinate. You must also inform the doctor if you have an allergy to the drug Dutasteride. In all such cases, informing your doctor before you buy Proscar is advisable.

Proscar Dosage

Proscar 5mg once daily is the recommended dosage of this drug, which can be taken with or without food. This is to be consumed orally and can be done so independently or with an alpha-blocker such as Doxazosin. This combination is excellent for reducing the risk of symptomatic development of benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Interactions

It is important to note that there have not been many clinical studies regarding interactions of other drugs with Proscar. It is important to seek the assistance of your doctor before taking any medication with Proscar. The following drugs are known to interact with Proscar: Aspirin, Coreg, Coumadin, Crestor, Flomas, hydrochlorothiazide, Lasix, Lipitor, lisinopril, metoprolol, Nexium, Norvasc, omeprazole, Plavix, simvastatin and Synthroid.

There are certain ingredients that are known to have an adverse effect on the efficiency of Finasteride, which include ingredients like Hypericin, St. John's Wort, Hypericum Perforatum and dried Hypericum Perforatum extract. It is important to monitor the patient in case of any combined use of Proscar with any other drug containing the above ingredients. In case of any adverse interaction, immediate medical intervention is essential.
