General Information on Pulmicort Turbuhaler
Pulmicort Turbuhaler is used for treating COPD or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or for managing asthma in patients over 6 years of age. The generic name of the drug is Budesonide and it belongs to the category of inhaler corticosteroids. Pulmicort Turbuhaler is an inhalant that needs to be inhaled by the patient through the mouth. The drug works by reducing swelling or irritation in the breathing tubes or bronchioles, thus controlling and preventing symptoms of asthma. Pulmicort Turbuhaler cannot relive asthma attacks, but can only reduce their frequency or intensity.
Side Effects for Pulmicort Turbuhaler
Nosebleeds, a runny nose, bad taste in the mouth, changes in voice, hoarseness, and a dry or irritated throat are common side effects of Pulmicort Turbuhaler. Most of these are short-lived and get better on their own within a few days. However, it can sometimes lead to conditions like unusual hair growth, unusual tiredness, easy bruising or bleeding, vision problems, a puffy face, mental or mood changes, muscle pain or weakness, thinning skin, increased thirst or urination, and slow wound healing. Under such circumstances, you should immediately stop using the inhaler and contact your doctor. Since this medicine works by lowering your immunity, your body becomes susceptible to infections. Any signs of a new infection include a sore throat, ear pain, chills, or fever.
A serious allergic reaction to Pulmicort Turbuhaler is rare, but you need to watch out for symptoms such as rashes, hives, trouble breathing, severe dizziness, or swelling or itching of the face, throat, tongue or lips.
Precautions
Before you buy Pulmicort Turbuhaler, you should inform your doctor if you have high blood pressure, liver disease, bleeding problems, stomach or intestinal problem, thyroid problem, diabetes, bone loss, a mental or mood disorder, or eye disease. You should also inform him/her if you have a current or past infection such as herpes or tuberculosis. Pulmicort Turbuhaler can mask the signs of a new infection, so you should avoid being near people infected with flu, measles, or chickenpox and take special care of your personal hygiene. As Pulmicort Turbuhaler may also decrease the efficiency of certain vaccines, you should not receive any immunization or vaccine during the course of treatment. You should also avoid being near people who have been recently vaccinated with live vaccines.
Pulmicort Turbuhaler Dosage
If you have previously received treatment with inhaled corticosteroids or bronchodilators, you will be advised to take Pulmicort Turbuhaler 200-400mcg twice daily. If you have previously received treatment with oral corticosteroids, you will be advised to take Pulmicort Turbuhaler 400-900mcg twice daily. The maximum dosage given to a patient can be Pulmicort Turbuhaler 800mcg twice a day. Dosage adjustments will be made depending on your medical condition, intensity of the disease, age, and response to treatment.
Interactions
Some of the medicinal products that can interact with Pulmicort Turbuhaler include quinolone antibiotics such as levofloxacin or ciprofloxacin and other medicines that weaken your immunity, such as cyclosporine, natalizumab, azathioprine, or chemotherapy. Azole antifungals (e.g. ketoconazole), rifamycins (e.g. Rifabutin), anti-seizure medicines (e.g. phenytoin or carbamazepine), and macrolide antibiotics (e.g. erythromycin) can affect the removal of budesonide from the patient’s body, thus affecting its functioning. Consult your doctor if you are taking any of these medicines, in addition to any other herbal products, health supplements, and over-the-counter medications.
