General Information on Relistor
Relistor is a subcutaneous injection recommended to treat constipation and chronic constipation that is induced by prescription pain medicines known as opioids. The treatment is specifically recommended to patients who are currently receiving palliative care and who have not responded well to laxative therapy. The generic name of the drug is Methylnaltrexone Bromide. The drug belongs to class of drugs known as peripheral opioid receptor antagonists. It works by targeting the inherent cause of opioid-induced constipation. The medication prevents the pain medications (opioids) from binding to specific receptors present in the intestinal tract. The medication does not affect or reduce the pain relieving effects of medicines. The drug may cause side effects if used for unintended purposes. Side Effects for Relistor
Relistor reacts differently with different people. Some people may experience mild to severe side effects while some may not experience any side effects at all. You should inform your doctor, if any side effects become bothersome or persist for long time.

Precautions
You should not take Relistor injection, if you are hypersensitive to Methylnaltrexone. The medication should not be used by people who have blockage in intestines or stomach. Women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant should inform their doctor before beginning treatment that includes taking Relistor injection. Relistor Dosage
The medication is available in three different dosage forms; a single use vial is available as Relistor subcutaneous injection 12 mg/0.6 ml vial, Relistor pre-filled syringe 8 mg/0.4 ml for subcutaneous injection and Relistor pre-filled syringe 12 mg/0.6 ml for subcutaneous injection. The dosage of Relistor is generally recommended by your doctor. The recommended dose of Relistor is one dose every 24 hours. The dosage of Relistor depends on the weight of the patient. An 8 mg dose is recommended for patient weighing between 38 to 62 kg while 12 mg dose for patient weighing between 62 to 114 kg. A 0.15 mg per kg is the recommended dose for patients who fall outside the above mentioned ranges. The injection volume of Relistor is determined by the following formula. The patients’ weight in kg needs to be multiplied by 0.0075 and the answer (volume) that is obtained needs to be rounded to nearest 0.1 ml. The medication should be injected in thigh region, abdomen or upper arm.
Interactions
Relistor may interact with prescription medicines, over the counter medicines or herbal supplements drugs and cause side effects. Your doctor will be aware of the drug’s possible interaction with other medicine and therefore, you should inform your doctor about every medicine you take.
