General Information On Retrovir

Retrovir (Zidovudine) is used to treat and prevent the spread of HIV. It is important to note that this drug is solely used for the purpose of controlling HIV virus multiplication in your body, and not curing the disease as a whole. However, this drug, when given during pregnancy, is excellent for preventing the transmission of the virus from an HIV infected mother to her child. This drug is always used together with other antiretroviral drugs to help treat HIV.

Side Effects for Retrovir

Common side effects or adverse reactions to Retrovir include asthenia, headache, malaise, anorexia, constipation, nausea and vomiting. Liver damage is also common, which is marked by dark urine, nausea, clay colored stools, loss of appetite, stomach pain, low grade fever, and symptoms of jaundice, such as yellowing of eyes and skin.

Similarly, some people may experience lactos acidosis, which is characterized by muscle weakness or muscle pain, numbness, or tingling in the arms, legs and feet, breathing difficulty, fast heart rate, and nausea, which is often accompanied by vomiting. Another common side effect is pancreatitis, where you experience severe pain in the stomach along with nausea, vomiting and a rapid heart rate.

Peripheral neuropathy, easy bruising, easy bleeding, extreme weakness, pale skin, presence of white patches or sores in the mouth, fever, body ache, and flu symptoms are other side effects of Retrovir. You may also suffer from insomnia, have strange dreams, headaches, and experience overall fatigue due to the use of this drug.

In case of any adverse reactions to the drug, it is important to immediately notify your doctor and get remedial treatment.

Precautions

Patients with bone marrow suppression can face severe adverse reactions to Retrovir. As such, this drug should be used with extreme caution. Prolonged use of Retrovir with other drugs often causes myopathy and myositis, as well as lactic acidosis; thus, care should be taken to avoid these adverse reactions by way of careful monitoring.

The recommended dosage for Retrovir 100mg is 600 mg per day in divided doses, often combined with other drugs. For children who are pediatric HIV patients, the prescribed dosage of Retrovir 100mg should be dependent on the weight of the child, but the total dosage should not exceed the adult dosage.

Interactions

Drugs like Atovaquone, Doxorubicin, Methadone, Phenytoin, Flucanozole, Ganciclovir, Nelfinavir, Ritonavir, Stavudine, etc. all have interactions with Retrovir. It is best to inform your doctor about any drugs you take to help avoid drug interactions.
