General Information on Sabril
Sabril is an anti-epileptic medicine. It is used to manage seizures and is taken along with other anti-seizure medicines. The generic name of the drug is vigabatrin and it belongs to a class of medications known as anticonvulsants. It is also used for the treatment of infantile spasms. Sabril is available as a tablet, powder, and oral solution. The tablet form is recommended for adults over the age of 16. It also comes in the form of small sachets, and the powder is given to infants. Doctors recommend patients to buy Sabril when other anti-epileptic medicines have been tried without any success.
Side Effects for Sabril
Certain users may complain of headache, fatigue, drowsiness, joint pain, shakiness, diarrhea, depression, constipation, dizziness, confusion, clumsiness, abdominal pain, joint pain, anxiety, agitation, or hyperactivity. It only harms the peripheral vision and creates a tunnel vision that allows you to see things in front of you. Even if you do not detect any change in vision, you must get regular vision tests undertaken.
It is difficult to detect vision loss in babies, and it is totally up to the doctor and the parents to decide if administering the drug to the child is a risk worth taking. Get a vision test undertaken for the child before the treatment is started and every 3 months during the course of treatment. This must be adhered to even after the treatment is completed.
Inform your doctor if you are suffering from kidney disease or vision problems. It is not known whether Sabril can harm an unborn baby and if it is safe for pregnant women. It can pass through breast milk and harm the infant, so breastfeeding mothers are advised not to use Sabril.
Sabril Dosage
The recommended dosage for adults is 2 gms, which means 4 tablets of Sabril 500 mg have to be taken daily, along with other anti-epileptic drugs. Depending on the patient’s reaction, the dosage may be increased or decreased. The dosage for children is calculated according to their weight. The recommended starting dosage for children is Sabril 40 mg/kg/day. Infants suffering from infantile spasms are given Sabril 100 mg/kg/day or higher.
Interactions
Sabril can interact with certain medicines like amiodarone, clonazepam, deferoxamine, ethambutol, phenytoin, tamoxifen, and hydroxychloroquine. If you have been taking steroids such as Prednisone over a long period, you may react adversely to Sabril. It is important that you inform the doctor about all prescription and non-prescription medicines you are taking.
