General Information On Saizen
Saizen is a synthetic formulation of the human growth hormone. It is mainly indicated in the treatment of children who are unable to grow naturally as result of being affected by conditions caused by chromosomal anomalies such as Turner's syndrome and Noonan's syndrome. It is also used in adults who are deficient in growth hormone. Saizen is administered by either intramuscular or subcutaneous injections.
Side Effects/Precautions for Saizen
Saizen, or somatotropin, is to be used under strict medical supervision. Few patients who have been treated with brand or generic Saizen may develop antibodies against the drug itself. Hypoglycemia is another side effect that is sometimes seen during treatment with Saizen drug. Other side effects that occur inconsistently include hypothyroidism, fluid imbalance, tingling sensations, joint pain and seizures.
As with any other medication, somatotropin is known to react with other drugs and the patient must fully inform his/ her doctor of any medication being taken. Steroid use could decrease the potency if this drug. Patients with diabetic retinopathy or Prader- Willi syndrome and those who may have had a recent open heart surgery must avoid brand or generic Saizen at all costs. Patients with liver disease, scoliosis, hypertension, carpel tunnel syndrome and those under dialysis must consult their physicians before using this medication. Saizen is not expected to cause any harm to pregnant women or their fetuses and it is not known whether it is excreted in breast milk. Women falling under both the above mentioned categories must discuss these issues with their doctor before taking this medication.
Saizen Dosage
For Pediatric patients, the dosage for this drug should be individualized. For adults, the recommended initial dosage is 0.005 mg/kg. This dosage may later be altered according to your response. Saizen should be stored at a room temperature between 15 degrees and 30 degrees Celsius. Once reconstituted, the drug should be kept under refrigeration between the temperature of 2 degrees and -8 degrees Celsius. The solution remains stable for 14 days under these conditions. However, the reconstituted drug should not be frozen. Saizen is available in sterile, white, non-pyrogenic and lyophilized powder form. It is packaged as a vial or a click easy cartridge.
