General Information On Samsca
Samsca or Tolvaptan is an oral medicine used for treating low levels of salt or sodium in the patient’s blood (hyponatremia), which may be the result of heart failure, cirrhosis, SIADH or Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone Secretion, certain hormonal imbalance, or liver disease. This medicine belongs to the category of vasopressin receptor antagonists, which increase the amount of urine that you pass, thus causing the body to get rid of surplus water. Your doctor may advise you to buy Samsca so that the level of salt or sodium in your blood increases slowly and comes back to normal.
Side Effects for Samsca
Loss of appetite, dry mouth, fruity breath, dry skin, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, increased thirst, increased urination, weakness or constipation may occur as mild side effects of Samsca. Serious side effects that you may notice include fainting due to weakness, coughing up blood, dark vomit, and tarry or bloody stools. Contact your doctor immediately if you see signs of hyponatremia reversal, which may include problems with muscle or speech control, trouble moving the legs and arms, seizures, convulsions, mood changes, and swallowing difficulties.
Precautions
Dehydration may occur as a side effect of Samsca, especially if you have diarrhea or are vomiting persistently. Contact your doctor immediately if you notice dehydration symptoms such as lightheadedness, dizziness, and fast heartbeat. If you are suffering from severe liver disease or cirrhosis, you may have increased risks of intestinal or stomach bleeding. Tell your doctor if you notice bloody or black stools or bloody vomiting. You should avoid taking Samsca if you are not able to urinate, are allergic to Tolvaptan, and are already dehydrated. Drink lots of fluids within 24 hours of taking the drug. Avoid alcoholic beverages and consult your doctor about what fluids you can take and in what amounts. Sometimes, taking in too much liquid can be as dangerous as not drinking anything.
Samsca Dosage
Initially, Samsca 15mg dose is given once a day with or without meals. After 24 hours, you can take Samsca 30mg daily, and after that, Samsca 60mg once a day can be taken, if needed, till the desired serum sodium level is achieved. During the Samsca treatment process, you need to get your serum volume and electrolytes checked to find out whether the drug is working or not. If you have stopped taking the medicine and want to restart it, then do not restart it at home; do so only under medical supervision in a hospital.
Interactions
Tell your doctor about all the prescription and non-prescription drugs you are using at present. Your healthcare professional will not recommend to you to buy Samsca if you are already using birth control pills, antibiotics, anti-depressants, barbiturates, diuretics, heart and blood pressure medicines, HIV medicines, potassium supplements, seizure medications and potassium citrates. Other medicines that may interact with Samsca are Aprepitant, Cyclosporine, Digoxin, Rifabutin, Rifampin, and Rifapentine or St. John’s Wort. These drugs may include Emend, Sandimmune, Priftin, Rifater, Mycobutin, Adoxa, Sumycin, Noroxin, Flagyl, Norpramin, Zoloft, Solfoton, Midamor, Prinivil, Accupril, Polycitra, Sustiva, Carbatrol, Dilantin or Tegretol.
