General Information on Savella
Savella is included in the clinical treatment of fibromyalgia. The medication is prepared from Milnacipran, which is a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. Though recommended for fibromyalgia patients in the United States, the medication is used in other countries as an antidepressant as well. Savella works by restoring the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain. This helps in treating various symptoms and effects of fibromyalgia.
Side Effects for Savella
Pounding heartbeat and painful urination are two common side effects reported with the use of Savella. Weakness, seizures, chills, nosebleeds, blood in cough, and memory problems may also occur as the medication’s side effects. Hallucinations, nausea, diarrhea, confusion, loss of memory, fainting, and lack of concentration may also occur. Other common side effects of Savella include stomach pain, jaundice, and loss of appetite, high blood pressure, and chest pain. Less common side effects include headache, tiredness, dizziness, constipation, dry mouth, insomnia, weight change, and excessive sweating. You may also experience decreased sex drive while taking the medication. Immediate action needs to be taken if any of these symptoms occur in the form of emergency medical help.
Precautions
Patients suffering from narrow-angle glaucoma should not take Savella. Consult your doctor if you have ever suffered from liver diseases, kidney diseases, heart disease, and seizures. High blood pressure, bleeding disorders, urination disorders, and any type of allergy must also be reported to the doctor before starting the medication. Consult your doctor if you suffer from a psychiatric disorder. Dehydration, stomach ulcers, and any record of suicidal attempts are other situations your doctor must be familiar with.
Those who have a history of alcohol abuse should not buy Savella before consulting the doctor. No major side effects have been reported by pregnant or nursing women taking Savella; even so, it is advisable to let your doctor know about these situations before taking the drug. Avoid operating heavy machines and driving extensively while on Savella.
Savella Dosage
Savella is an oral medication that can be taken with or without food. The recommended dosage is Savella 100 mg, which must be taken as Savella 50 mg twice a day. Your doctor may prescribe Savella 200 mg a day, depending on your specific condition. However, the dosage should not increase Savella 200 mg in any case. The medication should not be stopped without consulting the doctor as it may lead to withdrawal symptoms. It is important to get your condition diagnosed regularly to ensure the desired functioning of the medication.
Interactions
Savella should not be taken simultaneously with MAO inhibitors as such interactions can prove fatal. Consult your doctor if you are already taking a blood thinner, diuretic, psychiatric disorder medication, Parkinson’s disease medication, or a headache medication. Also inform your doctor if you have been using any antidepressant. Clonidine, Digoxin, Tramadol, and lithium based medications and supplements should be taken only if allowed by the doctor. The interaction of Savella with any other drug can be avoided by discussing all prescribed or non-prescribed medications you have been using with your doctor.
