General Information on Selzentry
Selzentry is used in the treatment of HIV and AIDS. It is an antiviral medication that acts as a CCR5-blocking entry inhibitor. The generic name of the drug is maraviroc. It is meant to be used in combination with other HIV medications. When used with other drugs, Selzentry defends T-cells against R5 HIV by preventing it from entering the cells. T-cells fight infection and so, it is important to increase the number of T-cells in the body. HIV weakens the body’s immune system by taking over these T-cells. Selzentry works by preventing the HIV virus from invading the cells.
Selzentry is effective for treating only the CCR5 type of HIV. Before you buy Selzentry, your doctor will conduct a tropism test. However, it is important to remember that Selzentry neither cures HIV or AIDS, nor does it undo the damage already done to the T-cells.
Side Effects for Selzentry
The common side effects of Selzentry include nausea, headache, dizziness, fever, cold, rash, muscle pain, joint pain, insomnia, constipation, indigestion, heartburn, and mouth sores. In certain cases, some users may have depression, heart attacks, high blood pressure, and liver damage. A severe reaction to the drug is rare. However, you must inform the doctor if you are suffering from hives, rashes, wheezing, and swelling of the mouth and throat.
Patients who are on HIV medications suffer from a condition called Immune Reconstitution Syndrome. In such cases, the immune system gets stronger and starts fighting certain infections that were lying dormant in the body. The patient may develop new symptoms once he/she starts taking Selzentry.
Precautions
Before you buy Selzentry, inform your doctor if you are suffering from liver problems, kidney disease, heart disease, or low blood pressure. Selzentry can aggravate any existing liver damage. Inform the doctor if you detect signs of liver damage such as jaundice, dark urine, fever, loss of appetite, and clay colored stools. Selzentry is meant to be taken along with other HIV medications and does not cure or prevent HIV.
Selzentry is considered safe enough to be taken by pregnant women. However, it is not known if this drug passes through breast milk. As such, you must inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding your baby.
Selzentry Dosage
The drug is available in tablet form as Selzentry 150 mg and Selzentry 300 mg. The recommended dosage for adults is Selzentry 300 mg taken twice daily. The dosage varies in case you are already on some other medication.
Interactions
Selzentry can interact with other HIV medications. CYP3A inhibitors slow down the breakdown of Selzentry in the body. CYP3A inducers can speed up the metabolism of Selzentry in the body. The dosage of Selzentry will have to be adjusted depending on the other HIV medications prescribed to control this ailment. It also interacts with certain other drugs like seizure medicines, anti-fungal medicines, heart or blood pressure drugs, St. John’s Wort, etc.
