General Information On Sensipar
Sensipar is used in the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism (HPT) in kidney patients who are on dialysis. In addition to the above, doctors also prescribe this drug for people who have excess calcium levels due to overactive parathyroid gland. Further, Sensipar is used to treat excess amount of calcium in patients suffering from cancer of the parathyroid gland.
The generic name of the drug is Cinacalcet, and it belongs to a group of medicines referred as calcimimetic agents. This drug is available in form of oral tablets.
Side Effects of Sensipar
Some common side effects of this medication include diarrhea, dizziness, fatigue, headache, heartburn, itching, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and weakness. These side effects, in most cases, dissipate on their own within a few days. In case any of these side effects persist for a long time, you should consult your doctor.
Seek immediate medical help if you experience any of the following serious side effects: sudden weight gain, seizure, muscle tightness, or abnormally fast or slow heart rate.
Stop your medication and consult your doctor if you experience any of the following after taking Sensipar: shortness of breath, wheezing, trouble breathing, hives, or swelling of the lips, face, tongue, or throat.

Precautions
Do not buy Sensipar if you are allergic to any ingredient, active or inactive, present in its formulation. To ensure the drug is safe for you, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have/have had any of the following: high blood pressure, seizures, liver disease, heart disease, heart failure, or heart rhythm disorder. If you suffer from any of the above, your doctor may ask you to undergo special tests during the course of treatment to ensure the drug is not causing any fatal side effects.
If you are pregnant, do not use Sensipar without your doctor’s consent. Also breastfeeding women should use this drug only when their doctor approves its use. Consult your doctor before giving this drug to a child.
Sensipar Dosage
The drug is available in strengths – Sensipar 30 mg, Sensipar 60 mg and Sensipar 90 mg. The recommended starting dosage is Sensipar 30 mg daily. Depending on your response to treatment, your doctor may increase your daily dosage after some time. The maximum daily dosage is Sensipar 180 mg. You must ensure that your daily dosage do not exceed the maximum dosage. For best results, you should take the drug just after a meal. You should never take this medicine on an empty stomach.
Interactions
Sensipar can interact with certain other medicines such as, antidepressants, anti fungal medications, cancer medicines, cough medicines, blood pressure medicines, heart medications, and pain killers. Certain over-the-counter medicines such as minerals, vitamins and herbal supplements can also reduce the efficiency of Sensipar.
