General Information On Stalevo
Stalevo or Carbidopa, Levodopa and Entacapone is a combination of these three active ingredients that is effective in treating Parkinson’s disease. Carbidopa inhibits actions of dopa decarboxylase, the enzyme which breaks down Levodopa, so that more dopamine is made available for the brain’s receptors. Levodopa is converted into dopamine for replacing or supplementing dopamine that the brain no longer produces. Entacapone inhibits the action of COMT or catechol-O-methyltransferase, which breaks down Levodopa before it reaches the patient’s brain. Your doctor may recommend to you that you buy Stalevo in order to teat Parkinson's disease.
Side Effects for Stalevo
Some of the common side effects that Stalevo may trigger include constipation, dizziness, diarrhea, drowsiness, headache, dry mouth, loss of appetite, nausea, and change in taste. You need to stop taking the medicine and call your doctor if you experience any of the serious side effects of the medicine. These may include chest pain, dark urine, fainting, depression with thoughts of suicide, hallucinations, muscle pain, paranoia, seizure, watery diarrhea, painful or unusual movements of the face, eyelids, tongue, mouth, arms, legs and hands, unusual appearance of moles on the skin, and yellowing of the eyes and skin.
Precautions
Stalevo is not recommended for those patients who exhibit hypersensitity to any of the three components of the medicine or its excipients. The drug is also not to be used by patients who have narrow-angle glaucoma or those who have undiagnosed or suspicious skin lesions or melanoma. As the drug causes dizziness and drowsiness, you should not drive, operate a machine, or do any such activity which requires extreme alertness.
Stalevo Dosage
You can buy Stalevo in six strengths: Stalevo 50mg, Stalevo 75mg, Stalevo 100mg, Stalevo 125mg, Stalevo 150mg and Stalevo 200mg. Your doctor will advise you to take the proper strength based on your needs. You will take one tablet per dose. If you are taking Stalevo 200mg tablets, then you may take up to a maximum of 6 tablets everyday. The strength of the tablet recommended to you depends on your medical or mental condition, and your doctor may also ask you to change the dosage from time to time according to your condition and response to the treatment. If you experience suicidal thoughts, you need to visit your doctor regularly and tell him/her about this side effect. While taking the medicine, never cut, chew or crush the pill, as it may result in the release of too much of the drug into your system at one time.
Interactions
Stalevo should not be used with non-selective monoamine oxidase inhibitors, which is a class of antidepressants. Using Stalevo with these may result in life-threatening side effects. If you were already using those medicines before taking Stalevo, then stop taking them at least 2 weeks before starting Stalevo. It should also not be taken with transdermal Selegiline and Entacapone. You should talk to your doctor and tell him/her about all the prescription and non-prescription drugs you are taking at present. Based on this information, the doctor will be able to decide whether Stalevo will be the right medicine for you or not.
