General Information On Starlix
Starlix is an ant diabetic drug that is used in the management of non insulin dependent diabetes mellitus or Type 2 diabetes, in addition to exercise and diet. It helps lower blood glucose level by stimulating the β cells of the Pancreas. Starlix is usually prescribed to be taken three times a day and about thirty minutes before meals. Patients are usually advised to skip their scheduled dose of the drug if they intend to skip a meal.
Side Effects/Precautions For Starlix
Flu like symptoms, respiratory trouble, back pain and dizziness have all been reported as side effects of Starlix or Nateglinide. Few instances of jaundice have also been reported following use of brand or generic Starlix. Hypoglycemia, usually a common side effect of anti diabetic drugs, has not been commonly seen with this medication.
The effects of brand or generic Starlix in patients with moderate to severe liver impairment has not been clearly studied yet, so such patients must exercise caution while using this medication. Nateglinide should be avoided by pregnant women. Starlix drug has been shown to be excreted in breast milk. Therefore, mothers breastfeeding their infants must not consume this drug. This medication is used specifically to treat type 2 Diabetes; therefore it is contraindicated in patients with type 1diabetes and diabetic ketoacidosis. Although very rare, overdose of Starlix drug can potentially lead to coma. So, patients showing hypoglycemia or other overdose symptoms must immediately seek medical attention. Patients must also discuss possible drug interactions with their doctor.
