General Information on Sustiva
Sustiva is an anti-viral medication that is used as a part of HAART or Highly Active Anti Retro Viral Treatment. It is used in combination with other drugs to specifically treat HIV type 1 infection. Sustiva belongs to the class of drugs known as non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors. This drug could also be used for prophylaxis or as a preventive measure for those people who are at constant exposure to HIV infected patients. This medication acts by preventing the virus from rapidly replicating in the body.
Side Effects/ Precautions for Sustiva
Efavirens as it is also known, is commonly known to cause side effects like headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, headaches, impaired concentration, neurological symptoms, rash and redistribution of fats in the body. The more serious adverse effects of the drug, however, include severe psychiatric symptoms and clinical depression leading to suicidal thoughts. Therefore patients consuming brand or generic Sustiva must be carefully monitored during the course of treatment. Sustiva is also known to cause convulsions; therefore, adequate precautions need to be taken.
Sustiva drug, in a few cases, has also caused liver failure. Liver function must be constantly monitored in such patients and those with severe liver impairment must be very careful before using this drug. Patients with previous known episodes of conditions like erythema multiforme and Stevens- Johnson syndrome should also refrain from taking brand or generic Sustiva. This medication is not recommended to pregnant women, especially those in their first trimester. It is not clearly known if Efavirens passes through breast milk but patients who are HIV positive are not advised to breast feed.
Sustiva Dosage
Sustiva is given as a dose of 600 mg orally along with antiretroviral medications. It is recommended to be taken preferably at bedtime on an empty stomach. It is to be taken in the capsule form and not broken. If it is taken in combination with voriconazole, then the voriconazole dose should be extended to 400 mg every 12 hours and the Sustiva dose should be limited to 300 mg once a day. For pediatric patients of age 3 years and older whose body weight ranges between 10 to 40 kg, the dosage is according to the body weight. The dosage for children weighing more than 40 kg is 600 mg once a day.
