General Information On Temodar
Temodar (also called Temodal) is an anti-cancer medication that belongs to the class of drugs known as alkylating agents. It is indicated for use in two types of brain tumors - glioblastoma multiforme and refractory anaplastic astrocytoma. It causes damage to the DNA of the affected cells and kills these cells. Temodar capsules are to be taken on an empty stomach.
Side Effects/Precautions For Temodar
Most side effects of Temodar, pharmacologically known as temozolomide, can be anticipated and are deemed manageable. Nausea, vomiting, hair loss, anorexia, headaches and fatigue are the common, less threatening side effects. However, serious or life threatening adverse effects have also been noticed with brand or generic Temodar. These effects are attributed to the medications ability to decrease counts of white blood cells and platelets. If any such symptoms are noticed by the patient after Temodar use, it must be reported immediately to a physician.
Prior to commencement of treatment with temozolomide, all patients must receive prophylactic treatment for pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. Constant monitoring of blood counts is necessary for all patients using this drug. Patients also on medication with steroids and those with kidney and liver impairment must be very careful while using brand or generic Temodar and must be under constant medical supervision. This medication may cause injury to a developing fetus; hence pregnant women are advised to avoid this drug. Temodar drug is known to be excreted through mother's milk, although, this fact hasn't been clearly established yet. But in general, it is recommended that nursing mother stay away from this drug.
