General Information On Tequin
Tequin is an antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections such as bacterial infections of the urinary tract, skin, lungs, and sinuses, and certain sexually transmitted diseases. You should not use this drug to treat viral or yeast infections. Gatifloxacin, the generic name of this drug, belongs to a group of drugs known as fluoroquinolones.
Side Effects for Tequin
Tequin may cause certain side effects. Some side effects of this medicine are serious, while others are mild. Before you buy Tequin, you should discuss what side effects to expect, how to cope with them, and what you should do if Gatifloxacin causes an allergic reaction or a serious side effect with your doctor.
The common and less serious side effects of this medicine include: mild nausea, headache, dizziness, or diarrhea. Uncommon, but serious side effects include: seizures, chest pain, muscle pain, joint pain, irregular heartbeat, fainting, and mental/mood changes. In case of an allergic reaction, the following symptoms will occur: shortness of breath, wheezing, rashes, itching, or swelling of the face, tongue, lips, or other body parts.
Tequin may also cause side effects that are not mentioned above. The patient information leaflet that is made available to you when you buy Tequin contains a complete list of side effects that this drug may cause.
Precautions
Do not use Gatifloxacin if you are diabetic, as it is contraindicated in diabetes. Before prescribing Tequin, your doctor needs to know your medical history. If you have a medical history of certain conditions such as liver or kidney disease, heart disease, heart rhythm disorder, or epilepsy, then he/she may ask you to undergo special tests before declaring the treatment as safe for you.
Tequin should not be given to someone who is below 18 years of age. The efficacy and safety of this drug in pregnant and nursing women is not established, so do not take this drug without consulting your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
This medicine may increase your sensitivity to sunlight. Make sure you take appropriate measures when going out in the sun to avoid sunburn.
Tequin Dosage
The dosage of Tequin varies from patient to patient and depends on certain factors such as the condition being treated, the patient’s response to therapy, and other medicines that the patient is taking. It is absolutely critical that you take Tequin as directed by your doctor. The oral medicine is available in two strengths- Tequin 200mg and 400mg.
Interactions
Certain drugs are known to reduce the effectiveness of Tequin. These are: antacids containing aluminum or magnesium, mineral/vitamin supplements containing magnesium, iron, or zinc, or didanosine tablets. If you are taking any of the aforementioned medicines along with Gatifloxacin, then ensure that you maintain an appropriate gap—at least four hours—between the two medications.
Some medications such as warfarin, digoxin, NSAIDs, tricyclic antidepressants, probenecid, cisapride, erythromycin, and others may increase certain side effects of Tequin. Inform your doctor about all the medicines that you are taking. Do not start on any new medication without consulting your doctor.
