General Information On Timoptic XE
Timoptic XE is a beta-blocker and patients suffering from high pressure in the eyes due to glaucoma and some other eye diseases are prescribed Timoptic XE. Elevated pressure in the eye increases the risk of blindness and so, it becomes essential to lower the pressure immediately. The main ingredient of this drug, Timolol maleate, is a non-selective adrenergic receptor blocker, which, when applied topically on the eye, reduces the elevated pressure to minimize damage to the optic nerve.
Side Effects for Timoptic XE
Common side effects of Timoptic XE include temporary blurred vision, temporary burning or itching or redness/stinging of the eye, conjunctivitis, pain in the eye, sensation of the presence of a foreign body in the eye, and discharge. In some cases, patients can experience increased sensitivity to light, drooping eyelids, double vision, etc.
Other side effects include dizziness, headache, weakness, nausea, dry mouth, diarrhea, loss of appetite, cough, stuffy nose, as well as a ringing in the ears. Depression, confusion, anxiety and hallucinations are also some of the common side effects of Timoptic XE. Additionally, you may experience rashes on the skin, swelling or rapid weight gain, wheezing, numbness or tingling, or a general cold feeling in your feet and hands as well as chest pain with a slow and uneven heart rate. Sleep disorders are also common with this drug.
If you exhibit any of the above side effects, it is important to contact your doctor immediately and seek medical attention. Some people are advised to discontinue this drug in certain cases, but this depends on your situation and the advice of your doctor.
Precautions
Never use another eye medication simultaneously with Timoptic XE. However, where it is absolutely essential, make sure that there is a considerable time gap of ten or more minutes between the two medications.
Ensure that the dropper does not come in direct contact with your eyes or hands as such contact will contaminate the dropper and can result in a serious infection, possibly leading to a loss of vision or damage to the eye.
If you have a history of bronchial asthma or are suffering from bronchial asthma or severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiac failure, sinus bradycardia and second or third degree atriventricular block, you should avoid Timoptic XE completely.
Temporary blurring of vision is a usual side effect of this drug and so, you should take care not to perform any dangerous activities or drive or use any machinery immediately after using this drug.

Interactions
It is important not to use two topical beta andregernic blocking agents. Additionally, it is important to monitor the use of oral and topical beta andregernic blocking agents to prevent the possibility of overdose. Similarly, calcium antagonists, anti depressants, Reserpine, Quinidine, Clonidine etc. should be avoided while using Timoptic XE.
