General Information on Topamax
Topamax is an anti-seizure medicine used for the treatment of epilepsy. Its generic name is Topiramate, and it is a part of the therapeutic class of anticonvulsants. Topamax is an orally administered tablet which slows down the electrical signals to the brain, as a result of which epileptic seizures are prevented. This drug can also be used for preventing migraine attacks, and it does so by calming the nerve cells of the brain. You should remember that this drug can only decrease the frequency and intensity of seizures and migraine attacks, but it cannot stop an attack that’s already been triggered.
Side Effects for Topamax
Most Topamax patients complain of mild dizziness, a tingly feeling or numbness in the body, change in sense of taste, diarrhea, nervousness, weight loss and cold symptoms like sneezing, stuffy nose and sore throat. A majority of these side effects can be easily managed and subside as your body gets used to the drug. However, if they persist or worsen, you should stop taking the tablets and seek medical help. Keep a watch out for some new symptoms that may have developed, including anxiety, trouble sleeping, panic attacks, restlessness, aggression, agitation, irritability, impulsiveness, depression and suicidal thoughts. Some serious side effects that very few Topamax patients may encounter include memory problems, problems with balance or speech, sudden loss of vision, pain behind or around the eyes, decreased sweating, severe pain in the lower back, increased body temperature, increased thirst, and dry mouth.
An allergy to this medication can be identified by severe dizziness, trouble breathing, hives, or swelling on the lips, tongue, throat and face. If you develop an allergic reaction to the medicine, you must immediately stop taking Topamax and call for medical help.
Precautions
Do not buy Topamax if you have an allergy to Topiramate. You should also inform your doctor if you have a kidney disease or kidney stones, liver disease, glaucoma, growth disorder, depression, osteoporosis, asthma, low bone density, or metabolic acidosis. If you have having suicidal thoughts after taking the drug, you should tell your doctor and family about it, so that they can be around and keep an eye on your well-being. If you are taking birth control pills to prevent an unwanted pregnancy, Topamax may decrease their efficiency. Therefore, you should use a barrier form of contraception during the course of Topamax treatment. You should not take this drug during pregnancy, as it may increase risks of a cleft palate or cleft lip in your newborn baby. Breastfeeding mothers should also not be given this medicine, as it may pass into their breast milk and harm the nursing child.
Topamax Dosage
If you are using Topamax for preventing epilepsy, you will be given Topamax 200mg twice a day. However, if you are using it for preventing migraine attacks, you will be given Topamax 50mg twice a day.
Interactions
You should not take Topamax along with glaucoma medications, urinary or bladder medications, bronchodilators, and other anti-seizure medications.
