Torisel is a medicine that is indicated for the treatment of an advanced cancer that has begun in the kidneys; this tumor is known as renal cell carcinoma (RCC). This drug has to be administered by infusion by a person qualified for medical care. It belongs to the family of drugs known as kinase inhibitors. mTOR is a human protein that regulates cell growth, survival and multiplication. The drug inhibits the action of this protein which acts on both the cancerous and the normal kidney cells. The potential result of this effect is a slow growth of these cells. Torisel also works on thwarting the creation of vessels that provide blood to the advanced tumor cells.
Side Effects / Precautions For Torisel
The active ingredient of this drug is temsirolimus. Do not take this drug if you are hypersensitive to temsirolimus, antihistamines or to any other ingredient of this drug. This drug can potentially interact with a lot of other drugs (brand or generic) you already might be on; make sure to tell your doctor about all your prescription and non-prescription medicines as also about the herbal supplements. The drug is contraindicated in patients with certain liver disorders. Tell your doctor if you have ever had a disease of the kidney or lungs, a tumor in the central nervous system, diabetes or high levels of lipids in the blood. This medicine might cause harm to the fetus. Hence, you or your partner should not become pregnant while you on therapy with Torisel drug. Do not breast feed your infant while on the medication.
Some side effects of the drug include tiredness, weakness, skin rash, mouth ulcers, nausea, loss of hunger or increase in retention of body fluids. You might also experience an increase in cholesterol or blood sugar levels. If any of these effects persist for a substantial amount of time, contact your healthcare provider.
Dosages For Torisel
Each packet of Torisel comprises of a single-use vial containing 25 mg/ml of the drug and one diluent vial. The usually recommended dose of the drug is 25 mg infused in a period of about an hour once a week. The drug must be stored between 2-8oC. Protect this medication from light.
