General Information On Toviaz

Toviaz is used in the treatment of a condition called Overactive Bladder (OAB) which is characterized by increased frequency of urination, sometimes with incontinence. Patients suffering from OAB are also known to have their sleep interrupted several times in the night due to the need to urinate (nocturia). The action of Toviaz is primarily directed at the muscles of the kidney. It helps the bladder relax and as a result increases the bladder's capacity, thereby preventing frequent uniration.

Side Effects/Precautions For Toviaz

Toviaz contains an anticholinergic (antimuscarinic) drug called Fesoterodine. The most common side effect of Toviaz is dry mouth. Other adverse effects include constipation, decreased sweating, upper abdominal pain, nausea, drowsiness, urinary tract infection and dry eyes. More serious adverse effects associated with use of brand or generic Toviaz include irritable bowel syndrome, urinary retention and diverticulitis, although these cases are very rare.

Obviously, patients must avoid driving or other activities that require alertness of mind, when under this medication. Patients also taking drugs like ketoconazole must not take brand or brand or generic Toviaz. This medication must be used with caution in patients with kidney and liver impairment, narrow angle glaucoma, myasthenia gravis, urinary bladder obstruction and decreased gastrointestinal motility. Since Fesoterodine may injure the fetus, pregnant women and nursing mothers should use Toviaz drug only if benefits outweigh the risk and this decision must only be made by a doctor.
