General Information On Trisenox

Trisenox is an anti-cancer medicine used for treating cancer of the bone marrow and blood, medically termed as acute promyelocytic leukemia or APL. Its generic name is Arsenic Trioxide, and it belongs to the therapeutic class of anti-neoplastics. You can buy Trisenox in the form of injections. This medicine works by interfering with the growth of cancer cells in a patient’s body. This drug is given to a patient only if other treatments, including chemotherapy, have been unsuccessful in treating the condition.

Side Effects for Trisenox

Side effects like nausea, stomach pain, constipation or diarrhea, headache, depression, insomnia, muscle or joint pain, abnormal vaginal bleeding, or mild itching or rash may commonly occur after taking Trisenox. A skin reaction at the site of injection may also occur, including pain, swelling, or redness in the area. Most of these side effects are temporary and subside within a few hours or days. However, if any of these become intolerable, you should contact your doctor and seek medical help. Contact your doctor immediately if you develop any serious side effects such as dry cough, tiredness, weakness, chest pain, shortness of breath, wheezing, severe dizziness, fainting, or nosebleeds.

Trisenox may sometimes increase your blood sugar levels. This can be identified by loss of appetite, increased thirst, fruity breath, drowsiness, increased urination, and dry skin. It may also result in low potassium level in your blood. Therefore, you should watch out for symptoms such as erratic heartbeat, extreme thirst, leg discomfort, limp feeling, increased urination, and muscle weakness. You should also seek medical attention if you show symptoms of an allergic reaction after taking the Trisenox injection. Such symptoms may include swelling of the face, throat, tongue, or lips, severe dizziness, difficulty breathing, and hives.

Precautions

Before you buy Trisenox, you should inform your doctor about all the other medical conditions you are suffering from. Special tests and dosage adjustments will be needed if you are suffering from conditions such as kidney or liver disease, high blood pressure, electrolyte imbalance, congestive heart failure or heart rhythm disorder, or if you have a history of Long QT syndrome. Pregnant women should not take this drug as it can reach the fetus and cause birth defects in the unborn child. You should also not become pregnant during Trisenox treatment. This drug must also not be taken by breastfeeding mothers, as it may pass into breast milk and harm the nursing child.

Trisenox Dosage

Trisenox is diluted with 100ml to 250ml 5% Dextrose Injection, or 0.9% Sodium Chloride Injection immediately after withdrawing it from the ampule. Trisenox is a one-time use ampule and contains no preservatives. Therefore, you must discard any leftover portions in the ampule. Trisenox is given intravenously into the patient’s vein over a period of 1-2 hours. In the case of an acute vasomotor reaction, the infusion can be extended for up to 4 hours.

Interactions

Avoid taking other drugs that can affect heart rhythm along with Trisenox. These may include amiodarone, procainamide, dofetilide and sotalol. Macrolide antibiotics such as erythromycin may also cause the same effect. You should also inform your doctor about other medicines you are taking at present, especially NSAIDs, corticosteroids, medicines that curb immunity and drugs that lower your blood mineral count. Such drugs may include prednisone, ibuprofen, amphotericin B, etc.
