General Information On Tygacil

Tygacil is a recently developed antibiotic that belongs to a class of drugs called Glycylcyclines . It is used to treat specific infections called Complicated Intra-Abdominal infections (CIAI), Complicated Skin and Skin Structure Infections (CSSSI), Community-Acquired Bacterial Pneumonia (CABP) and also infections of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA). Tygacil is a bacteriostatic drug, which means, it only limits or stops the growth of bacteria without killing it.

Side Effects/ Precautions for Tygacil

Tygacil or Tigecycline, most commonly causes nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, headaches and diarrhea as side effects. This medication may also cause pain in the site of the injection, thrombophlebitis and sometimes even sepsis. In isolated cases, Tygacil drug is also known to have caused pancreatitis and jaundice. Since the chemical structure of this drug is similar to tetracycline, most adverse effects are similar to those seen with tetracycline. It is important to note that brand or generic Tygacil is to be given only to those patients above the age of 18. This drug can be detrimental to developing teeth in children and potentially cause permanently stained or malformed teeth. Care must be taken while treating patients with severe liver or kidney problems using Tygacil drug.

Since Tigecycline has a broad spectrum of action; it could cause super infection (destruction of even the beneficial intestinal flora) and fungal growth. This medication could decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills; therefore, patients are advised to employ other methods of contraception. Pregnant women must be wary of brand or generic Tygacil as it could result in fetal injury. Also, nursing mothers should also avoid using this medication as it could be excreted in breast milk.

Tygacil Dosage

To start with, an initial dosage of 100 mg of Tygacil is to be given to the patient. Once this heavy dose takes control of the medical condition, a dosage of 50 mg can be repeated at an interval of every twelve hours. In case of intravenous infusions of this medicine, dosages need to be given half hourly or hourly in every twelve hours. For an intra-abdominal infection and complicated infections related to the skin or skin structures, a course can be given for about five to fourteen days depending upon the response of the patient. For those who are suffering from bacterial pneumonia caused due to any community-acquired bacteria, Tygacil treatment for seven to fourteen days is recommended depending on the infection’s severity and the patient’s clinical progress.
