General Information On Uloric
Uloric is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor that is used for treating gout and increased uric acid levels in the blood. It produces its therapeutic effect by inhibiting an enzyme called xanthine oxidase which is needed for the production of uric acid and thereby eventually decreasing uric acid levels. Uloric must be used exactly as directed as difficulties may ensue following careless use of this medication.
Side Effects/ Precautions for Uloric
Uloric, also known as Febuxostat is known to cause acute gout flares upon initiation of treatment. In such cases, patients may be supplemented with pain killers (Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs) to help cope with the pain. Common side effects seen with the use of brand or generic Uloric include liver abnormalities, nausea, joint pain, ringing in the ears, numbness, blood in urine, easy bruising, bleeding and rashes. Non-fatal heart attacks and stroke have also been reported in rare cases. Due to the possibility the drug causing liver abnormality, it is recommended that liver function be monitored constantly.
A high level of anti-platelet events have been observed with the use of Febuxostat and therefore, patients who notice any sign of stroke or heart attack must immediately report to a doctor and discontinue use of brand or generic Uloric. Uloric Dosage
Most patients with gout who are suffering from Hyperuricemia are given a 40 mg dosage of Uloric once in a day. If the patient does not achieve a particular level of Serum Uric Acid (i.e. 6 mg/dl) in two weeks with a dose of 40 mg, the dosage can be increased to 80 mg daily. There are no constraints as to whether this medicine has to be taken with or without food. Be it renal impairment or hepatic impairment at a moderate level, no adjustment has to be made to Uloric dosage. The use of this medicine should be discontinued if the patient develops gout flares.
