General Information On Ultravist
Ultravist is a drug used during intra-arterial procedures including cerebral arteriography, peripheral arteriography, coronary arteriography, aortography, visceral angiography and ventriculography, and intravenous procedures including excretory urography, contrast computer tomography of the head and body, and peripheral venography. Its generic name is Iopromide, and it belongs to the class of non-ionic contrast agents. You can buy Ultravist in the form of an injection. It delineates body structures that contain iodine, and does not delineate body structures that do not contain iodine. In this way, a contrast is made, and internal structures are visualized. Sometimes, this drug can also be used for the evaluation of neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions.
Side Effects for Ultravist
Ultravist can cause cardiac disorders in patients, such as bradycardia, atrio ventricular block, and ventricular extrasystole. Gastrointestinal disorders are common, which include stomach discomfort, abdominal pain, constipation, dry mouth, diarrhea, increase in saliva, and rectal tenesmus. Sometimes, it may also lead to pyrexia, excessive thirst, chills, chest discomfort, asthenia, extravasation, edema peripheral, and hyperhydrosis. When your blood is investigated, increase in blood lactate dehydrogenase, blood urea, hemoglobin and white blood cell count may be noticed. You should contact your doctor immediately if you experience musculoskeletal pain, neck pain, myasthenia or arthralgia. Mental disorders that Ultravist can trigger include confusion, dizziness, agitation, convulsion, somnolence, tremors, visual field effect, paresthesia, and lack of coordination. Some patients may also suffer from urinary retention, renal pain, asthma, rash, flushing, hypertension, and dysuria.
An allergic reaction to Ultravist can be identified by difficulty in breathing, swollen face, tongue, throat or lips, hives and rashes. If you experience any of these, Ultravist is not suitable for you.
Precautions
Do not buy Ultravist if you have developed an allergic reaction to it before. You should also inform your doctor if you are suffering from other medical conditions, especially kidney or liver disease, iodine deficiency, heart disease, low white blood cell count, high blood pressure, or diabetes. Pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers should also not take this drug, as its safety during these conditions has not yet been established.
Ultravist Dosage
In case of cerebral arteriography, 3-12ml Ultravist is injected in the patient’s carotid arteries, 20-50ml in the aortic arch, and 4-12ml in the vertebral arteries. The maximum dose given to a patient is Ultravist 150ml. In the case of peripheral arteriography, 5-40ml is injected in the sub-clavian or femoral artery, and 25-50ml in aortic bifurcation. For coronary arteriography and ventriculography, 30-60ml is injected in the left ventricle, and 3-14 ml in the left or right coronary artery.
Interactions
If you are taking biguanides, Ultravist may precipitate lactic acidosis. Therefore, you should stop taking them before and after 48 hours of your examination. Beta blockers may increase your risks of developing an allergy to Ultravist. Interleukins may also cause an allergic reaction after Ultravist treatment. Patients with liver dysfunction who take oral cholecystographic agents may develop renal toxicity after taking Ultravist injection. Ultravist should not be mixed with any other drug, as it may cause adverse reactions in the patient.
