General Information On Valtrex
Valtrex is prescribed to treat infections caused by a group of Herpes viruses. In adults, it is used to treat genital herpes and cold sores. It is also used to treat recurrent episodes of genital herpes and shingles. Mostly prescribed for adults with a normal immune system, brand or generic Valtrex is also prescribed for HIV patients. In children, it is commonly used to treat chicken pox.
Side Effects/Precautions For Valtrex
In adults, Valtrex or Valacyclovir causes headaches and nausea as common side effects. It can also cause stomach problems like diarrhea and pain. Other side effects of brand or generic Valtrex include easy bleeding or Thrombocytopenia, though this is rare. This could be a potentially life threatening condition. Severe anemia is another side effect that is reported in both kids and adults. Less common side effects are increased heart rate, hyper tension and neurological problems like depression. The chances of allergic reactions exist in kids, often seen as a skin rash, facial swelling and itching.
Blood and kidney side effects caused by Valacyclovir are usually seen in immune system compromised patients and older individuals. A transplant can also be a stimulant for the side effects of the Valtrex drug. The medication is not used unless necessary for pregnant women. It can also pass from a mother to a child through breast feeding. This must be taken into consideration. Other drugs can interact with it and result in adverse side effects. Valtrex Dosage
For adult patients with cold sores, 2 grams of Valtrex can be taken twice in one day. The duration between two doses should be of 12 hours. In case of adults with initial episodes of genital herpes, the dosage will be 1 gram to be taken two times daily for about 10 days. It can be taken regardless of meals. Adults who suffer from recurrent episodes of genital herpes can take two dosages of 500 mg daily for three days. A dosage of 1 gram daily is ideal for patients with suppressive genital herpes who have a normal immunity level
