General Information On Vectibix

Vectibix is used to treat metastatic tumors mainly of the colon and rectum. It is generally used after treatment with another drug in colorectal cancers which have spread to other parts of the body. It works by binding itself to some proteins or cancer cells that are responsible for growth and spread of the cells.

Side Effects/Precautions For Vectibix

Vectibix or Panitumumab can cause severe skin problems like acne, dryness and cracking. These problems can persist leading to a wide spread infection that can be fatal. While being injected with the Vectibix drug, many individuals experience dizziness, chills and light headedness. These are only temporary until the infusion lasts. However, if they last longer, its use may need further consideration. Most side effects may not appear until 2 weeks after infusion. Hence, any sign of a skin rash or eye reaction at this point of time requires medical evaluation. The effects of brand or generic Vectibix may take a long while to subside even after you stop the medication.

Panitumumab can also cause nausea and fatigue. It has also been associated with sores in the mouth, apart from a feeling of fullness in the stomach and chest. Swelling of hands and knees is another side effect that is experienced on being injected with Vectibix. Pregnant women or women planning pregnancy should let their doctors know about their condition as brand or generic Vetibix is categorized as harmful for unborn babies. It can also affect a women's fertility, which is a very important consideration to keep in mind with regard to this medication.

Vectibix Dosage

The drug Vectibix is administered intravenously and is infused over the time of 60 minutes in 14 days. The dosage recommended is 6mg/kg, though a higher dose of 1000mg should be infused over 90 minutes. The use of Vectibix should be immediately and permanently discontinued for patients with severe reactions while infusion. For toxicities of grade 3 occurring dermatologically, the drug should be discontinued. If the toxicity lowers to grade 2, the drug can be administered starting at 50% of the original dose and following with 25% increments till the time the dosage reaches 6mg/kg recommended dose. Recurrence of the toxicity requires the drug to be permanently discontinued.
