General Information on Vermox
Vermox is used in the treatment of worm infections such as hookworm, pinworm, and roundworm. The generic name of this drug is Mebendazole, and it falls under the category of drugs known as antihelmintic. Like other drugs in its class, Mebendazole works by preventing the infection-causing worms from growing inside the patient’s body.
Vermox is an oral tablet. The drug is available in Vermox 100 mg strength. Besides Mebendazole—which is the active ingredient—it also contains the following inactive ingredients: corn starch, colloidal silicon dioxide, microcrystalline cellulose, hydrogenated vegetable oil, magnesium stearate, sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium starch glycolate, sodium saccharin, tetrarome orange, FD&C yellow NO. 6, and talc.
Side Effects for Vermox
Side effects may occur in a few patients after taking this medication. With that said, it is important to iterate that serious side effects occur very rarely when a patient is on Vermox.
Mild and temporary side effects of this medication are as follows: diarrhea, fever, or abdominal pain. In most cases, these side effects occur during the start of treatment while the patient’s body is still getting used to the drug. After a few days, you can expect these side effects to stop occurring. In case these side effects persist for a long time, you should consult your doctor or pharmacist.
In rare cases, Vermox may trigger a potentially fatal allergic reaction. You should seek immediate medical help if you experience any of the following side effects after you take Vermox: shortness of breath, wheezing, trouble breathing, hives, rashes, itching, or swelling of the lips, tongue, throat, or face.
Precautions
You should not buy Vermox if you are allergic to Mebendazole or any other ingredient used in the formulation. To ensure that the drug is safe for you, discuss your medical history with your doctor.
The safety of Vermox in pregnant women has not been studied. Consult your doctor before using Vermox if you are pregnant. It is unclear if the contents of this drug are excreted into the breast milk and whether they can cause harm to a nursing child. Women who are breastfeeding should take Vermox only if their doctor gives them the go ahead.
Consult your doctor before giving the drug to children aged less than 2 years.
Vermox Dosage
Your doctor will recommend the correct dosage depending on the type of infection you have. For instance, the recommended dosage for the treatment of pinworm is 1 tablet of Vermox once only. For the treatment of common roundworm, hookworm, and whipworm, the recommended dosage is 1 Vermox tablet twice a day for 3 days. For best results, it is important that you take the medicine exactly as directed by your doctor.
Interactions
Certain drugs, when taken with Vermox, may increase some of its side effects or decrease its effectiveness. These are: mephenytoin, phenytoin, carbamazepine, and ethotoin. To ensure that you do not experience any unwanted drug interactions, inform your doctor about all the drugs that you are currently taking before starting treatment. This includes all prescription, non-prescription, and herbal drugs.
