General Information On Vigamox
Vigamox are available as eye-drops and is used to treat conjunctivitis caused by a range of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. This drug belongs to class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones. Vigamox acts by inhibiting a certain enzyme called DNA gyrase in the bacterial cell, eventually killing it. Patients are to use this medication exclusively as eye-drops.
Side Effects/ Precautions for Vigamox
Vigamox or Moxifloxacin is an antibiotic and as in the case of all antibiotics, it must not be used for long periods of time as this could result in fungal infection. Common eye related side effects of Vigamox drug includes dryness of the eye, redness and itching sensation in the eye, keratitis, decreased clarity in vision, subconjunctival hemorrhage and tearing. Other than this, nasal stuffiness, infection of the ear and pharyngitis may also occur.
Allergy to Moxifloxacin or any quinolones should preclude use of this medication. Patients using Vigamox drug must make sure they don't touch the tip of the eye dropper as this may cause contamination of the sterile dropper. Patients should also make it a point to wash their hand thoroughly before using brand or generic Vigamox. If you wear contact lens, discontinue their use until the conjunctivitis has been treated successfully. It is unclear as to whether this medication can cause complications in pregnant women and therefore, pregnant women should try and avoid brand or generic Vigamox. This medication, however, is not known to be secreted in breast milk; so, nursing mothers may use them but only under directions from a doctor.
Vigamox Dosage
Vigamox should only be used as per your doctor’s advice. The ideal dosage of this medicine is 3 drops on a daily basis. However, all the drops should not be put in the infected eye at the same time. The total dosage of 3 drops is to be spread over the day by putting 1 drop at a time; three times a day. For instance, you can put it in the morning, evening and then at night. Usually, this medicine is prescribed for seven continuous days. However, if the patient does not recover during this period, the doctor may either continue treatment with Vigamox for a few more days or may change the drug based on the response of the patient.
