General Information On Viroptic Eye Drops
Viroptic eye drops is an antiviral medication for eye infections. The generic name of this medicine is Trifluridine Ophthalmic. It is used to treat herpes infections that affect the eyes. The herpes virus lives in our body until an outbreak triggers it. Trifluridine Ophthalmic belongs to a group of drugs known as antivirals, which are used to fight herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2. An infection by this virus causes swelling or ulcers in the eyelids or the cornea. Viroptic eye drops can also be used to treat other eye infections as well.
Side Effects for Viroptic Eye Drops
Viroptic eye drops do not cause any serious side effects. When you apply the drops, you may feel a temporary stinging or irritation in the eye. Close your eyes and lie down for a while if this happens to make the mild irritation go away. In case it persists or worsens, call your doctor right away.
Some other side effects of using Viroptic eye drops are swelling of the eyelids, tunnel vision, blurred vision, pressure within the eye, etc. In extreme cases, people who are allergic to these drops may break out in hives and rashes.
Precautions
Viroptic eye drops treat infections caused by viruses only. They will not treat infections caused by bacteria or fungi. Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to Trifluridine. It should not be used on children younger than 6 years. Inform your doctor if you have any other eye related problems such as glaucoma or cataracts.
It is not advisable to use Viroptic eye drops during pregnancy. It has not been ascertained if the medicine can be passed on to a child through breast milk. It is better to consult your doctor if you are breastfeeding.
You may feel some discomfort after applying the medicine. It is better not to drive or operate heavy machinery immediately after using Viroptic eye drops. Wait for a few moments till your vision is clear enough to resume these activities.
Viroptic Eye Drops Dosage
Viroptic eye drops contain 1% Trifluridine in an aqueous solution with certain other components.
Viroptic eye drops are to be applied directly to the eye. Put one drop into the affected eye every 2 hours or as directed by your physician. However, do not use more than 9 drops a day. Once your condition improves, you can cut down on the dosage to about 4-5 times a day if directed by your physician to do so.
Always ensure that your hands are clean before using the drops. Do not allow the dropper to come in direct contact with your eye as it can cause further infection. Remove your contact lenses before applying the drops and put them on only after a gap of 15 minutes. If you miss a dose, then take it as soon as you remember. However, do not double dose. Instead, skip the missed dose and continue as usual.
Viroptic Eye Drops Interactions
Viroptic eye drops can interact with other eye drops. In case you are taking other ophthalmic solutions, consult your doctor about the safety of using Viroptic eye drops.
