General Information on Welchol

Welchol is a cholesterol lowering drug that is generally used in patients who have failed to respond to exercise and diet control. Patients must note that once treatment with this medication has been started, exercise and diet control must not be abandoned, instead, it must supplement the medication. Welchol acts by bonding to bile acids which are based on cholesterol and drives them out of the blood. This causes the liver to convert the extra cholesterol into bile acids, effectively reducing the "bad" cholesterol levels. This medication is also known to be beneficial in diabetes type 2 patients.

Side Effects/ Precautions for Welchol

Welchol, also known as Colesevelam is known to cause side effects like constipation, dyspepsia, pharyngitis, muscle pain and sometimes flu-like symptoms. In rare cases, headache, pancreatitis, flatulence and stool abnormalities may also be seen. In patients who take brand or generic Welchol for type 2 diabetes, hypoglycemia has been noted in some cases.

Colesevelam is known to decrease efficacy of anticonvulsive medication phenytoin and therefore, patients on such medication must take appropriate precautions. Certain treatment modifications may be necessary in patients also undergoing thyroid hormone replacement therapy or those being treated with warfarin while taking Welchol drug. Patients with a history of bowel obstruction and those with very high levels of triglyceride (more than 500mg/dl) must not take brand or generic Welchol. Patients with Vitamin deficiencies must be careful as this drug can decrease the rate of absorption of fat soluble vitamins (Vitamins A, D, E and K). Although enough evidence has not been obtained with regards to its fetal toxicity, pregnant women are advised not to consume Welchol drug unless there is no other alternative. Similarly, nursing mothers are advised to avoid this drug.
