Wellbutrin XL is primarily an anti depression drug. It is used to treat patients suffering from severe depression and who harbor suicidal thoughts. It is also used to treat patients with seasonal affective disorder. This medication belongs to a pharmacological class known as amioketones. The XL in the name stands for extended release. Therefore, Wellbutrin XL is generally not used more than once a day.

The active agent in Wellbutrin XL is Buproprione. Common side effects known to occur with this drug are rash, nausea and in higher doses, agitation. Patients may also show symptoms like insomnia, ringing in the ears, palpitations, muscle pain, abdominal discomfort, dry mouth, sweating and constipation. Because of the possibility of worsening of clinical depression, patients who consume brand or generic Wellbutrin XL must be kept under supervision. Should the patient show any signs of exaggerated depression or suicidal thoughts after commencement of therapy, the drug must be discontinued immediately and brought to the notice of a doctor.

Wellbutrin XL drug must not be given in those with known history of seizures. Treatment with brand or generic Wellbutrin may trigger bipolar disorder. When such symptoms are suspected, alternative or supplemental therapy may be required. It must be noted that Wellbutrin XL drug is an extended release preparation, so consecutive doses should be at least 24 hours apart.
