General Information On Xarelto

Xarelto is an anti-coagulant; in other words it a drug that prolongs clotting of blood. It is used by patients undergoing hip or knee replacement surgery to prevent blood clot formation within the veins - Venous Thromboembolism(VTE). For patients undergoing hip surgery Xarelto is generally prescribed for a longer duration. This medication prevents clot formation by inhibiting an important factor (factor X) involved in the clotting cascade.

Side Effects/ Precautions for Xarelto

Xarelto is pharmacologically known as Rivaroxaban. Common side effects include elevated levels of an enzyme called gamma glutamyl transpeptidase or GGT (a symptom that is also seen in disease of the liver and pancreas), increased bleeding following the surgical procedure and nausea. Patients consuming brand or generic Xarelto have also reported to have been affected by constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, increased gastrointestinal bleeding, blood in the urine, dry mouth, kidney and liver disorders and sometimes even jaundice.

Patients must make sure they inform the prescribing physician of any other medication they may be taking. Rivaroxaban is known to react with ketoconazole, itraconazole and ritonavir. It could also potentiate the anti-platelet action of drugs like aspirin. Patients with moderate to severe kidney or liver impairment must not take Xarelto drug. Patients consuming this drug must get their blood counts and bleeding times constantly evaluated. Most preparations of brand or generic Xarelto contain lactose and patients allergic to it must not take this drug. Xarelto drug is contraindicated in pregnancy as it can cause significantly increased bleeding during child birth.
