General Information on Xifaxan

Xifaxan is a semisynthetic, non-systemic antibiotic used to treat hepatic encephalopathy and traveler's diarrhea, which is a bacterial infection of the intestines caused by the bacteria Escherichia coli. The condition is acquired by consuming contaminated food or water. Its main advantage is that the medicine will not pass into circulation through the wall of the gastrointestinal tract. Its side effects are minimal and chances of developing resistance to it are few. It is also used to relieve symptoms of bloating and flatulence in irritable bowel syndrome.

Side Effects/Precautions for Xifaxan

Its main side effect is that it can cause severe inflammation of the intestines due to bacterial overgrowth. Xifaxan or Rifaximin has not been studied on pregnant women.
