General Information On Xylocaine
Xylocaine or Lidocaine is an anti-arrhythmic drug commonly used as local anesthetic. Lidocaine is available in form of a gel, spray, and injection. The medication is applied tropically to alleviate pain, burning sensation, and itching due to skin inflammation. Xylocaine is used as a local anesthetic for carrying out minor surgery and is also used as a dental anesthetic. You can buy Xylocaine for treating jellyfish stings as it instantly numbs the affected region and stops nematocyst discharge. Lidocaine is also used for treating status epilepticus. Xylocaine is administered intravenously to cure ventricular arrhythmias.
Side Effects for Xylocaine
Most of the adverse reactions of Xylocaine are brought about by a rise in plasma levels caused due to rapid absorption, overdose or inadvertent intravascular injections. Some of the common side effects include problems related to the central nervous system such as euphoria, confusion, drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, blurred vision, nausea, tremors and convulsions. In rare cases, you may observe allergic reactions such as urticaria, edema, lesions and anaphylactoid reactions. Most of the side effects caused due to the use of this local anesthesia are dependent on the dose of the medication and the method of administration of Xylocaine.
Precautions
Lidocaine injections should be administered by an experienced professional. The lowest dosage of anesthesia should be used to reduce the rise in plasma levels. Doctors should constantly monitor all the respiratory and vital cardio signs of the patient when he/she is under the influence of local anesthesia. When Lidocaine is used as an epidural, healthcare staff must make sure that the patient is carefully monitored for cardiovascular or central nervous system toxicity. Reduced dosage of this medication should be used in patients under shock, children, elderly patients and persons who are acutely ill. Use this medication with caution in patients with spinal deformities, severe hypertension, septicemia and neurological disease.
Xylocaine Dosage
Xylocaine is available as a dermal patch, intravenous infusion/injection, local anesthetic injection, oral liquid, oral gel, tropical gel, tropical liquid/patch/aerosol spray, and a nebulizer. Xylocaine injections are given for producing regional or local anesthesia by making use of different procedures just like lumbar and caudal epidural blocks or a peripheral nerve block. The medication can be used with or without epinephrine. To check the patient’s reaction to this drug, 1.5% Xylocaine 2-3 ml is administered to the patient 5 minutes before injecting the complete dose. The dosage of this medication depends on a person’s age, weight and medical history. For healthy adults, Lidocaine with epinephrine dosage should be around 7mg/kg and should not exceed 500 mg. When Xylocaine is used without epinephrine, the dosage should be restricted to 300mg. When using it for intravenous regional anesthesia, a single vial of 0.5% Xylocaine 50 ml is generally used.
Interactions
Xylocaine administration to patients using tricyclic antidepressants or on monoamine oxidase inhibitors can cause severe hypertension. The presence of butyrophenone and phenothiazine can reverse the effect of Xylocaine used with epinephrine. The use of this drug with any other local anesthesia agent is not recommended.
