General Information On Xyzal

Xyzal is an antihistamine and is used for the treatment of perennial allergies in both adults and children who are at least 6 months old. It is also used for the treatment of seasonal allergies in adults and children in the age group of 2 years and above. This antihistamine reduces natural chemical histamine in the body. Histamine is the chemical which can produce symptoms of itching, sneezing, runny nose and watery eyes. This drug works by jamming the actions of histamine.

Side Effects / Precautions for Xyzal

Xyzal (Levocetirizine) should not be taken if you have any kidney disease (or you are on dialysis), liver disease or gallbladder related problems. You should avoid Xyzal drug if you are allergic to cetrizine. FDA has categorized brand or generic Xyzal as a type B drug. Though this medicine is not expected to be dangerous for an unborn child, you should consult your doctor before taking the Xyzal drug if you are pregnant or you are planning to get pregnant. It is also known to pass through the breast milk and cause problems to a nursing baby. Xyzal should not be used for babies younger than 6 months of age.

The common side effects of brand or generic Xyzal are somnolence, nasopharyngitis, fatigue and dry mouth. You may also experience impairment of thinking and reactions while taking Levocetirizine drug. Try to avoid consumption of alcohol while taking the medicine and be cautious while driving or doing anything that requires you to be alert or awake.

Xyzal Dosage

Xyzal is an oral solution that is available in 2.5 mg /5ml and 5 mg breakable tablets. The recommended dosage of this drug in adults and children above the age of 12 is 5mg of 1 tablet or 2 teaspoons of 10 ml oral solution once every day in the evening. In some patients the dosage may be restricted to 2.5 mg, as a ½ tablet or 1 teaspoon of 5 ml oral solution. In children between 6 to 11 years of age, the recommended dosage is 2.5 mg, as a ½ tablet or 1 teaspoon of 5 ml oral solution once every day in the evening. The recommended dosage of Xyzal in children between 6 months and 5 years of age is 1.25 mg, as a ½ teaspoon oral solution to be taken once every day in the evening.
