General Information On Zithromax

Zithromax is a medication taken by adults for treating bacterial infections. Examples of such infections include respiratory infections, ear infections, skin infections and STDs, or sexually transmitted diseases. Zithromax is also administered to children for treating middle ear infection, tonsillitis, strep throat, and pneumonia. The generic name of this medication is azithromycin, and it belongs to the group of antibiotic medications. You can buy Zithromax as an oral suspension or an oral tablet. As an antibiotic, Zithromax fights the bacteria in the body. It may also be administered for other medical purposes as determined by the doctor.

Side Effects for Zithromax

An allergic reaction to Zithromax is characterized by difficulty breathing, hives, and swelling of lips, face, throat and tongue. You must stop taking Zithromax and seek immediate medical assistance if you suffer from any signs of allergy or severe side effects. These side effects include bloody or watery diarrhea, uneven heart rate, chest pain, low fever, stomach pain, nausea, clay-colored stools, dark colored urine, and yellowing of the eyes or skin. Inform your doctor at once if you suffer from severe skin reactions to Zithromax, which is characterized by a sore throat, fever, swollen tongue or face, burning sensation in the eyes, and the appearance of a red or purple skin rash that also causes peeling and blistering of the skin.

Mild side effects may surface when you take Zithromax, but you must inform your doctor if they worsen or persist for longer than usual. These less serious side effects include stomach upset or pain, mild diarrhea, vomiting, nausea or constipation, dizziness, headache, fatigue, unusual nervousness, insomnia, vaginal discharge or itching, mild skin rashes or itching, hearing problems, ringing sensation in the ears, and a decreased sense of smell or taste.

Precautions

You must not buy Zithromax if you have a history of liver problems or jaundice caused by taking azithromycin, or if you have a known allergy to azithromycin or any other antibiotics like erythromycin, clarithromycin, telithromycin, and troleandomycin. Inform your doctor if you have myasthenia gravis, kidney disease, liver disease, heart rhythm disorder, or Long QT syndrome. Zithromax may not affect an unborn child, but you must inform your doctor beforehand if you are pregnant. Do not take this medication if you are breastfeeding without informing your doctor.

Zithromax Dosage

Zithromax can be taken as a tablet or as an oral suspension. The tablet form is available as Zithromax 250mg and Zithromax 500mg while the oral suspension is available as a Zithromax 1g packet, with 1 gram of the active ingredient azithromycin. The oral suspension must be mixed with 2 ounces of water, stirred, and immediately consumed. You may also add a little extra water into the same glass and swirl and drink the mixture to make sure that you take the complete dose.

Interactions

Zithromax is known to interact with several medications, including digoxin, carbamazepine, pimozide, phenytoin, triazolam, warfarin, other antibiotics, calcium channel blockers, ergot medications, cholesterol medications, and HIV medications. Inform your doctor if you have taken or are still taking over-the-counter and prescription medications, mineral and vitamin supplements, and herbal products. Do not start, stop, or alter the dosage of Zithromax or any other medication without consulting your doctor.
