General Information On Zoladex Depot

Zoladex Depot injections are used for the treatment of prostate cancer in men and in cases of advanced breast cancer in premenopausal women. It is a suitable drug for hormonal manipulation and used as an alternative to chemotherapy. It is also used in the case of Endometriosis as it helps ease symptoms like pain and reduce endometrial lesions. Apart from this it can be administered in the case of endometrial thinning, just before endometrial ablation procedure in women. Women who have uterine fibroids are advised Zoladex Depot drug injections along with iron therapy before surgery. It is injected into the anterior abdominal wall every 28 days.

Side Effects / Precautions For Zoladex Depot

Zoladex or Gosarelin should not be given during pregnancy or those planning a pregnancy due to risk of abortion or abnormality to the fetus. While on treatment for endometriosis, repeat treatment should be avoided due to concern about thinning of the bones and loss of bone mineral density. Additional hormone replacement therapy, if applied, may reduce the effect of bone density loss. For anemic women, brand or generic Zoladex depot should be given with an iron supplement for upto three months if surgery is intended. Side effects such as hot flushes and sweating have been noted in women, besides depression, headaches and increase in symptoms initially in case of breast cancer patients, which can be controlled symptomatically.

In males, the use of Gosarelin should be carefully monitored due to risk of developing uretic obstruction or spinal cord compression. Side effects include hot flushes, sweating breast swelling and tenderness. Rare cases of mild bruising at the SC injection site have been reported by the use of brand or generic Zoladex.
