General Information On Zonalon

Zonalon is used for relieving itching caused due to skin conditions like eczema, atopic dermatitis and neurodermatitis. Its generic name is doxepin, and it belongs to the category of dermatological agents. This medicine is available in the form of a cream, which needs to be applied topically on the infected area. It works by blocking histamine in the body, which triggers allergic reactions.

Side Effects for Zonalon

Burning or stinging at the site of application may occur. Some patients may also encounter dry mouth, dizziness, drowsiness, or changes in taste. Some serious side effects of the drug may include severe constipation, ringing in the ears, loss of coordination, mental or mood changes, persistent heartburn, depression, confusion, agitation, muscle spasms, muscle weakness, tingling or numbness in the hands or feet, decreased interest in sex, restlessness, weight gain, swelling on the hands or feet, and trouble urinating. If any of these symptoms become intolerable, you should stop using Zonalon and contact your doctor. Some patients may experience seizures, weakness on one side of the body, fainting, vision changes, slurred speech, and irregular heartbeat. These symptoms should be immediately informed to the doctor, as they may be signs of something serious.

An allergic reaction to Zonalon can be identified by severe dizziness, difficulty breathing, hives or swelling on the face, throat, tongue or lips. If you develop any of these symptoms, contact your doctor immediately and seek medical attention.

Precautions

Do not buy Zonalon if you are allergic to it, or if you have a prostate problem, heart, liver, or kidney disease, glaucoma, or urinary retention. You should also not use Zonalon if you have a history of heart problems, epilepsy, bipolar disorder, blood problem, alcohol abuse, an overactive thyroid, or suicidal attempts. As this drug can cause dizziness, do not do any such activity that requires complete alertness, such as driving a car, until you are aware how it will affect you. You should also limit alcohol intake, as it may worsen the side effect of dizziness. If you are to undergo a surgical procedure or dental treatment, you should inform your surgeon or dentist beforehand that you are taking Zonalon. This is because Zonalon may interact with anesthesia. It is not yet known whether this drug is safe for pregnant women or not. Therefore, you should take it with caution during pregnancy. Doxepin can pass into breast milk and may harm the nursing baby. Therefore, you should not take Zonalon while breastfeeding your child.

Zonalon Dosage

Apply a thin layer of Zonalan 5% cream on the affected area around 3-4 times a day for not more than 8 days. Higher doses or longer periods of usage may lead to greater systemic levels. Any kind of dressing should not be used on the affected area, as it may increase drug absorption and worsen the side effects.

Interactions

Fatal drug interactions may occur if you use Zonalon along with sibutramine, halofantrine, disopyramide, cisapride or arbutamine. You should also avoid taking MAO inhibitors, anticholinergics, inhaled bronchodilators, high blood pressure medications, nasal decongestants, sulfonylurea anti-diabetic medicines, thyroid medicines, HIV protease inhibitors, antidepressants, or heart rhythm medicines. Inform your doctor about all medications that you are currently taking including over-the-counter and herbal medicines.
