General Information On Zovirax Ointment

Zovirax Ointment is used for treating cold sores and genital herpes caused by the herpes simplex virus. Its generic name is Acyclovir, and it belongs to the class of anti-viral medicines. It prevents the multiplication of the virus inside the body so that the disease is controlled. This drug can only prevent the virus from multiplying further, but it cannot cure the condition.

Side Effects for Zovirax Ointment

Swelling, burning, pain, stinging and itching in the affected area may take place, but you should not discontinue using Zovirax Ointment unless the condition becomes intolerable. If you notice any other serious symptoms such as dizziness, chest pain, or signs of a new infection or flu symptoms, you should consult your doctor for medical help. Sometimes, a patient may also develop an allergic reaction to the drug. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include hives, rashes, severe dizziness, difficulty breathing, pain in the neck or throat or swelling on the face, throat, tongue or lips.

Precautions

Patients who are allergic to Acyclovir, valacyclovir, or any of the ingredients in the drug should not buy Zovirax Ointment. Make sure to wash your hands before and after applying the ointment. The ointment should be applied only to the area that has been affected by the virus. Avoid using it on other parts of your body, even the surrounding areas around the infection. Avoid pouring water on the area just after applying Zovirax Ointment, such as bathing, showering, or swimming. Also do not apply any bandage on the area unless your doctor has advised you to do so. It is important not to use any cosmetic product on the affected area, as it may cause inflammation. Such products may include lip balms, sunscreens, moisturizing lotions, etc. If Zovirax Ointment accidentally gets into your nose, eyes, or mouth, you should wash the area well with water. If the irritation is not relieved, you will need to seek medical attention. It is not known whether it is safe for pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers. Therefore, such patients should use this ointment only if clearly indicated.

Zovirax Ointment Dosage

You can buy Zovirax Ointment in 5% strength, available in 15gm tubes. The ointment has to be applied only on the skin, and is not meant for ingestion. While applying the ointment, try to use latex or rubber gloves to prevent the spread of the infection to other body parts. No matter what your age or weight, the dosage recommended to you will depend on the intensity of your infection. Do not stop using Zovirax Ointment without consulting your doctor, even if you feel that you are perfectly well.

Interactions

Since a minimal amount of Zovirax Ointment is absorbed into your blood, it is not likely to cause any serious interaction with other medicines. However, you should still inform your doctor about all the medicinal products you use, including oral medicines, injections, herbal preparations, dietary supplements, and topical applications.
