General Information On Actos
Actos is an anti-diabetic medicine used for controlling high blood sugar levels in patients suffering from non-insulin dependent Type 2 diabetes. Pioglitazone belongs to the category of glitazones, which help your body respond properly to naturally produced insulin so that the sugar level is brought down. Your doctor may prescribe you to buy Actos alone or in combination to other anti-diabetes medicines, so that conditions like blindness, kidney damage, loss of limbs, and nerve problems are prevented. The drug is available in the form of oral tablets with strengths of Actos 15mg, 30mg, and 45mg.
Side Effects for Actos
Sore throat, tooth problems, weight gain, and muscle pain are some of the common side effects that most Actos patients complain about initially. However, the side effects wane over time as your body adjusts to the drug. Pioglitazone may cause liver disease, which can be identified by dark urine, persistent vomiting or nausea, and yellowing of the skin or eyes. You should inform your doctor if you notice any of these symptoms. Sometimes, Actos can also cause a certain heart condition like congestive heart failure. You should contact your doctor immediately if you notice swelling of the hands or feet, breathing trouble, unusual tiredness, and unusual or sudden weight gain. An allergic reaction to the drug can be identified by hives, trouble breathing, swelling of the face, lips and throat, or skin rash.
Precautions
You should avoid consuming alcoholic beverages, doing strenuous exercises, or using any other anti-diabetic medicines while on Actos treatment. Doing so may make your blood sugar levels plummet, which can be identified by sudden sweating, fast heartbeat, shaking or tremors, hunger, dizziness, blurred vision, and tingling in the hands or feet. Before taking the medicine, you should inform your doctor if you are suffering from a liver disease, heart disease, diabetic ketoacidosis, fluid in the lungs, anemia, or macular edema. If you are suffering from fever, injury or infection, or have recently undergone a surgery, consult your doctor, as he or she may change your treatment plan temporarily. As Actos may cause changes in your menstrual cycle, promote ovulation, and increase your chances of getting pregnant, you should use effective birth control methods while you are on Actos treatment.
Actos Dosage
Actos has to be taken once a day with or without meals. Initially, patients are given Actos 15mg to 30mg once a day, but if one is suffering from congestive heart failure, then he or she will be given only Actos 15mg in a day. The dose can be increased by 15mg up to a maximum of Actos 45mg, depending on the patient’s response to the treatment.
Interactions
Your doctor will not recommend you to buy Actos if you are already using NSAIDs, seizure medicines, aspirin or any other salicylates, blood thinners, blood pressure or heart medications, insulin, sulfa drugs, MAOIs, and other oral medicines for treating diabetes. Some of these drugs also lower your blood sugar levels, and if they are used with Actos, they can affect your blood sugar adversely.
