General Information On Fosamax Plus D

Our bone is a living, growing tissue that starts deteriorating over a period of time. Due to aging, our bones become weak and brittle. Fosamax Plus D is used to treat this problem, specifically osteoporosis, in both men and women. The generic name of the drug is alendronate and cholecalciferol since it is a combination of these two drugs. Alendronate belongs to a group of medicines known as bisphosphonates, and cholecalciferol is a form of vitamin D.

Osteoporosis leads to porous bones caused by low bone mass. This leads to brittle bones and an increased risk of fractures, especially in the elderly. Alendronate alters the cycle of bone formation and its breakdown in our body. It slows down bone loss while also increasing the bone mass. Cholecalciferol helps in the absorption of calcium in our body.

Side Effects for Fosamax Plus D

Fosamax Plus D has some common side effects such as constipation, diarrhea, gastro-esophageal reflux, headache, abdominal pain, joint pain, bone pain, or muscle pain. These are mild side effects that generally go away once the treatment is over. In some cases, a person may have some serious reactions such as severe heartburn, severe pain in the bones, joints, or muscles, jaw or tooth pain, groin pain, throat pain, chest pain, or difficulty swallowing. In such a case, the doctor should be informed, and the patient must be given immediate medical attention.

Precautions

Before you buy Fosamax Plus D, you must inform your doctor if you have difficulty swallowing, have narrowing of the esophagus, cancer, or kidney disease. Fosamax Plus D can irritate the stomach lining and cause heartburn, indigestion, and even ulcers. Since it can increase the calcium levels in your blood, you must exercise caution if your blood calcium levels are already high. In rare cases, the drug can cause osteonecrosis of the jaw, which leads to disfiguring and eventual decaying and death of the jaw bone. Fosamax Plus D is not safe for pregnant women as it can harm their unborn child. It is not known if the medicine passes through breast milk, so it is recommended that you do not use this drug without consulting your doctor.

Fosamax Plus D Dosage

The recommended dose for the treatment of osteoporosis is Fosamax Plus D 70 mg once a week. The medicine should be taken on the same day each week. Since some foods and beverages can interact with Fosamax Plus D, it should be taken first thing in the morning. Always maintain a gap of 30 minutes between the dose and consumption of any food or beverage. Fosamax Plus D is meant to be taken with a glass of plain water only; do not use soda or fruit juice in lieu of water.

Interactions

Fosamax Plus D can interact with medicines such as aspirin, NSAIDs, calcium products, iron supplements, magnesium products, seizure medications, and diuretics.
