General Information On Baraclude
Baraclude is prescribed when a patient suffers from a chronic case of hepatitis B. Known as the 'silent killer' this illness can do serious damage to your liver. However, it is important to remember that brand or generic Entecavir does not cure the disease; it merely helps in fighting the virus in your blood, protecting your liver and in improving your condition. Side Effects / Precaution for Baraclude
There are three very important factors that you must remember when you are taking the Baraclude drug. Your condition can deteriorate drastically if you stop taking it. Lactic acidosis is a common side effect of brand or generic Entecavir and if it is not treated immediately it can even lead to death. It is caused by acid build up in the blood stream. Symptoms of this include weakness, stomach pain, breathing problems, coldness in hands and legs, dizziness and palpitations. Another common side effect of the drug is hepatotoxicity (enlargement of the liver) and steatosis (accumulation of fat in the liver). The symptoms of this are very similar to jaundice.
The recommended dose of Baraclude for adolescents aged 16 years or older and adults is 0.5 mg daily once for the treatment of hepatitis-B infection. Adolescents with minimum age of 16 years and adults having a history of hepatitis-B are recommended a dose of 1 mg, daily once. In a solution form, 10 ml of the drug provides 0.5 mg dose of the drug and 20 ml solution provides 1 mg of the drug. The recommended dose of Baraclude for patients with renal impairment depends upon their creatinine clearance. For creatinine clearance < 10 ml/min the dose is 0.05 mg, daily once. Similarly, for 10-29 ml/min the dose is 0.15 mg, daily once; for 30-49 ml/min the dose is 0.25 mg, daily once; for 50 ml/min and above the dose is 0.5 mg, daily once.

What is a "Generic" medication/drug?
Generic drugs are medications that have comparable medicinal ingredients as the original brand name drug, but which are generally cheaper in price. Nearly 1 in 3 drugs dispensed are "generic". They undergo testing to ensure that they are similar to their "brand" counterparts in:

How are Generic drugs tested to ensure quality and efficacy?
Generally speaking, the two most generally accepted methods to prove the safety of a generic version of a drug are to either repeat most of the chemistry, animal and human studies originally done, or to show that the drug performs comparably with the original brand name drug. This second option is called a "comparative bioavailability" study. During this type of study, volunteers are given the original drug, and then separately later the generic drug. The rates at which the drug is delivered to the patient (into their blood stream or otherwise absorbed) are measured to ensure they are the same. Because the same active ingredient is used the major concern is just that it delivers the common chemical(s) at the same rate so that they have the same effect.
