General Information on Lamisil

The chemical in Lamisil is Terbinafine hydrochloride. It is a powerful synthetic antifungal agent known for its ability to eliminate fungal and yeast cells. It has been approved for treating onychomycosis since 1996. Onychomycosis is a scientific name for a nail fungal infection and is usually difficult to treat. Lamisil treats fungal infections by killing the fungal cells that cause onychomycosis. It is not used for other infections that are caused by bacteria or viruses. The drug is used to treat infections of the fingernails and toenails and certain fungal infections of the hair and skin.

Lamisil Side Effects

Like most medicines, Terbinafine hydrochloride also has some side effects. Their intensity may vary from person to person and may not appear in all patients. However, most patients suffer only from mild side effects. The side effects that have been encountered with this drug include digestive problems such as diarrhea, nausea, lack of appetite, or mild pain in the abdomen. Other common side effects include headaches and skin rashes. A few patients have also reported a lack of taste. In very rare cases, serious skin reactions or liver dysfunction have been reported with Lamisil.

Lamisil Precautions

Lamisil is a prescription drug and must only be taken in the current dosage and duration as prescribed by your doctor. When you buy Lamisil, you will be provided with a patient information leaflet that provides complete details of the precautions you must take while using this drug. If you suffer from any kidney or liver disorder, you must inform your doctor about it. You must reduce or totally stop the intake of foods and beverages that contain caffeine. You may experience a loss of taste, but the problem will cease to be once the treatment is over. Lamisil is not to be used during pregnancy and for nursing mothers. Lamisil should be used with a lot of caution in the case of children.

Lamisil Dosage

Lamisil (Terbinafine hydrochloride) comes in the form of circular 250 mg tablets. The dosage of the drug in adults is one tablet of 250mg daily. The dosage in children may vary between 62.5mg to 250mg, depending on the child’s weight. The duration of the treatment is 6 weeks for fingernail fungal infections and 12 weeks for toenail fungal infections. For other fungal infections and in the case of a medical history of liver dysfunction or kidney dysfunction, the dosage and duration may be reduced. You can buy Lamisil 250mg tablets in bottles of 30 and 100 tablets

Lamisil Drug Interactions

Lamisil has the potential of enhancing the level and effect of certain other drugs in your blood. These drugs include beta-blockers, antipsychotic drugs, medicines for ADHD, and arrhythmia. This may lead to an increase in side effects of these drugs as well. Certain drugs like Cimetidine can also decrease the level and efficacy of Lamisil. This is why it is critical that your doctor knows about all the medicines you take before getting started with Lamisil.
