General Information On Malarone

Malarone is a combination of two drugs- proguanil and atovaquone, and is used for preventing and treating malaria. The drug belongs to the group of antimalarial medications and works by stopping the growth of malaria parasites in the red blood cells, thus preventing or treating the disease. You can buy Malarone in the form of oral capsules, which need to be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Side Effects for Malarone

Common side effects of Malarone include vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, headache, weakness, dizziness, and loss of appetite. Most of these are harmless and get better on their own, but if any of these persist or worsen, you need to seek medical help immediately. You should also inform your doctor if you experience signs of anemia like worsening tiredness, pale skin, nails or lips, rapid breathing and fast heartbeat while resting, signs of a liver problem like abdominal pain, dark urine, persistent vomiting and nausea, unusual tiredness, and yellowing of the skin or eyes, or signs of a severe infection like body ache, sore throat, severe chills, or high fever. An allergic reaction to the drug may be identified by rash, swelling or itching of the face, throat, tongue or lips, trouble breathing, or severe dizziness. If you experience any of these negative symptoms, you should discontinue using Malarone at once and contact your doctor.

Precautions

Malarone should not be used for the treatment of malaria in a child who weighs less than 11 pounds and for the prevention of malaria in a child who weighs less than 24 pounds. It should also not be taken by patients suffering from a liver or kidney disease. You should also inform your doctor if you are suffering from current vomiting or diarrhea, seizures, or mental or mood problems. As this drug makes you dizzy, you should not drive a vehicle or use a machine or do any such activity that requires complete alertness. Apart from that, you should also limit alcohol intake as it may worsen the condition. If you are pregnant, you should not travel to a place where malaria is rampant, as this may pose you and your unborn baby to higher risks of getting infected. The safety of Malarone during pregnancy or lactation is not established yet, and so, you should take it during these conditions only if it is clearly indicated.

Malarone Dosage

A doctor will recommend an adult to take one Malarone 250/100mg tablet once a day. If the patient is a child, the dosage given to him or her will depend on his or her weight. You will need to take the tablet at the same time daily with a milky drink or food. If you happen to vomit within 1 hour of taking this tablet, you will be advised to take another dose. If you are giving Malarone to a child, you can crush the tablet and mix it in condensed milk so that he or she can swallow it easily.

Interactions

Your doctor will not recommend you to buy Malarone if you are already taking a blood thinner like warfarin or penicillamine. You should also not take Malarone with drugs that may flush out the drug from the body, such as metoclopramide, rifabutin, rifampin, and tetracycline. Inform your doctor and pharmacist of all medications that you are currently taking.
