General Information on Mestinon

Mestinon is used for the treatment of myasthenia gravis, a neuromuscular disease marked by varying degrees of muscle weakness. The generic name of this drug is Pyridostigmine, and it works by preventing the breakdown of acetylcholine.

Mestinon is available in the form of oral tablets. Each tablet contains, besides Pyridostigmine, stearic acid, silicon dioxide, and lactose. As it is a prescription drug, you can buy Mestinon only if your doctor has prescribed it for your treatment.

Side Effects For Mestinon

The most common side effects of this drug are: mild nausea, vomitting, or diarrhea, increased urination, increased sweating, decreased pupil size, increased salvia or mucus, or abdominal cramps. Generally, these side effects disappear within a few days. You must consult your doctor if any of the aforementioned symptoms exacerbate or persist for a long time.

Some patients who take Mestinon have reported experiencing the following serious side effects: severe vomitting, vision or speech problems, mental/mood changes (such as anxiety, confusion), seizures, panic attacks, and muscle twitching. Consult your doctor immediately if you notice any of the above symptoms.

An allergic reaction to Mestinon is extremely rare. However, such a development can become dangerous, especially if left unattended. Seek emergency medical help if you experience a breathing difficulty, hive, or swelling of your lips, tongue, throat, or face after taking Mestinon.

Precautions

Patients who are allergic to Pyridostigmine or any other inactive ingredient used in the formulation should not buy Mestinon. Before you start treatment, share your medical history with your doctor, especially if you have/have had any of the following: liver disease, kidney disease, asthma or any other breathing disorder, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, ulcer, and overactive thyroid.

Before using Mestinon, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. The safety of the drug in these two conditions is unclear. Your doctor is the best person to judge if treatment is safe for you during pregnancy or while you breastfeeding.

Mestinon may cause vision or concentration problems in some. This is why during the course of treatment, you must take extra care when performing activities that require you to stay focused and alert, such as driving.

Mestinon Dosage

The drug is available in Mestinon 60mg strength. Your doctor will recommend the right dosage after taking into account your medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications that you are taking. It is critical that you take the drug exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not increase or decrease your dosage or length of your treatment without consulting your doctor. Take the drug with a glass of water. In case the drug causes an upset stomach, take it with food.
