Mirena or Levonorgestrel intrauterine system is a small device placed inside the womb or uterus of a woman in order to prevent an unwanted pregnancy. You can buy Mirena if you want a long term contraceptive method. This device provides protection against pregnancy for as long as 5 years. It is designed to release Levonorgestrel, a hormone that makes changes in the woman’s uterine lining and cervical mucus, thus making it difficult for the male sperm to reach the uterus.

Side Effects for Mirena

Irregular bleeding in the vagina, cramps, nausea, breast pain, headache, acne, hair loss, rashes, weight gain and decreased libido may be some of the common side effects of Mirena. If any of these symptoms worsen or persist, you should contact your doctor immediately. Some serious side effects may be: irregular menstrual periods, chills, depression, mood changes, painful intercourse, unexplained fever, difficulty breathing, and vaginal itching and swelling. Aside from these, if you are suffering from vomiting, tiredness, severe headaches, and a fast heartbeat, contact your doctor immediately and seek medical help. Mirena is not the right contraceptive method for you if you are experiencing unusual vaginal discharge or odor, heavy and prolonged vaginal bleeding, have trouble urinating, dark urine, lumps in the breasts, pelvic or abdominal pain, persistent nausea, and yellowing of the eyes and skin.

Precautions

You can buy Mirena only if you have given birth to at least one child and are in a constant sexual relationship with only one person. If you have a history of pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), then Mirena may not be the right device for you. The device needs to be replaced after 5 years if you still want contraception. If, at any time before 5 years, you want to become pregnant, then the device can be easily removed without any trouble. Mirena can come out or get displaced on its own, and so, you need to talk to your doctor or gynecologist, who will tell you how to check if the device is set in its place. Do these ‘checks’ after each menstrual period to ensure that the device has not moved. If you suspect that it has moved out of place and you are not feeling its threads, then it would be better to use condoms until you see your doctor to get yourself checked.

Mirena Dosage

Mirena has 52mg of Levonorgestrel. Initially, it releases the hormone at the rate of 20 mcg per day, but the rate decreases as the period of 5 years is completed. Therefore, it is important to get the device replaced after 5 years.

Interactions

Medicines which induce enzymes, such as CYP3A4, may decrease serum concentrations of the progestins. Other drugs that may decrease serum concentration in Levonorgestrel include Bosentan, Felbamate, barbiturates, Carbamazepine, Griseofulvin, Phenytoin, Oxcarbazepine, Rifampin and Topiramate. Significant changes in serum concentration of progestin is noticed when Mirena is used with HIV protease inhibitors or non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors. It would be better to tell your doctor about all the medicines and drugs you are using at present.
