General Information On Mycobutin

Mycobutin is an antibiotic medication that prevents bacteria from multiplying in the body. The generic name of this medication is Rifabutin. Mycobutin can be used to prevent MAC (Mycobacterium Avium Complex) in HIV patients and also be prescribed along with other drugs for treating tuberculosis in HIV patients.

Side Effects for Mycobutin

An allergic reaction to Mycobutin is characterized by shortness of breath, hives, and swelling of the throat, tongue, lips or face. Mild side effects include red, brown or orange discoloration of the skin, saliva, urine, stools, sweat, or tears, nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, vomiting or stomach pain, excessive belching, loss of appetite or bloating, headache, and mild skin rashes or itching.

Serious side effects include severe skin itching or rashes, weakness, pale skin, fever, body aches, easy bruising or bleeding, redness, eye pain, and vision loss. If you suffer from any of these symptoms, stop your Mycobutin course and inform your doctor immediately.

Precautions

Do not buy Mycobutin if you are allergic to Rifapentine, Rifampin, or Rifabutin. Mycobutin must not be used without other antibiotics that prevent MAC infections. If Mycobutin is used as a single medication, the tuberculosis may become resistant to the treatment. Inform your doctor if you have any allergies or if you are suffering from kidney disease. Mycobutin can reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills. Consult your doctor and use non-hormonal birth control measures like condoms, spermicide or diaphragm. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant during the course of treatment. Do not use Mycobutin without consulting your doctor if you are breastfeeding your child as the drug can seep into breast milk.

Do not wear contact lenses or dentures while using Mycobutin as it may discolor some fluids. This is not dangerous to the body, but it may stain your contact lenses or dentures. Antibiotic medications may cause diarrhea, which can signal a new infection. If you are passing watery or bloody stools, inform your doctor as soon as possible.

Do not buy Mycobutin as a medication to prevent sexually transmitted diseases like HIV, hepatitis B, syphilis, or gonorrhea. Mycobutin can make you feel dizzy, so do not drive or operate machinery immediately after taking the drug. Reduce your intake of alcoholic drinks while on Mycobutin treatment.

Mycobutin Dosage

You must buy Mycobutin and use it only as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. The recommended dosage of this medication is 300mg per day. It may also be 150mg a day depending on a patient’s reaction to the medication. Symptoms of an overdose include nausea, headache, and vomiting and stomach pain. Seek immediate medical assistance if you witness any of these symptoms. This drug comes in a Mycobutin 150mg tablet.

Interactions

There are certain medications that may interact with Mycobutin. Some of them include other antibiotics like Clarithromycin, Erythromycin, Itraconazole and Fluconazole. Mycobutin may also react with HIV medications like Amprenavir, Nevirapine, Nelifinavir, Indinavir and Saquinavir. Inform your doctor if you are taking any medications, including over-the-counter medications or prescription medications. This includes mineral and vitamin supplements and herbal products. Do not start or stop any new medication without the consent or advice of your doctor.
